My first setup

Well, I'm new and this is my first post, I am currently in the process of moving so my setup is right now in my current bedroom before I move to Washington, not the greatest placement of it, but I managed to piece together the whole thing for a little under $2,000 including cables. It's only packed into this 12X10 room because I couldn't possibly wait 2 more weeks to play with all my new toys... I've been doing car audio for a while, and this is my first true setup for home that I've ever owned, and I'm quite happy with it.

First for picture I have an Optoma DX617 DLP Projector currently with a component line in from a PS3 and a Comcast Cable box, as well as a computer VGA attached. All automatically switching when I move the input on the receiver.


For sound, I have an older receiver, about 9 years old, but it's a good one. A Yamaha HTR-5250.



I also have a Panasonic Technics receiver lying around that I use to amplify a seperate channel outside. For surround speakers (L,R back) I have Acoustic Research HD510 System that also includes the subwoofer which is a 150 watt heavy 10" beast that sits like an ottoman.


As for the screen, it's a 74X74 (about 6x6ft) screen that I have hung directly on the wall, and is a very solid screen. The projector is about 12 feet away, so I actually had to use the zoom to decrease the image size to work right. When I move this into an actual room I may get a larger screen. The projector is rather clear and allows a 1080i broadcast from my PS3 and Cable box.

What I don't have installed right now is my Sony SSF5000's that have not come in the mail yet that I am going to use as my front mains.

I'm still in search of a relatively nice, yet cheap dedicated center channel, as I only have about $100 left in my budget to spend. The surround sound speakers came with 5, but the idea is to only use the two in the rear, and then have the floor standing ones, and then a nicer center. Also ignore my wires, usually I'm a lot neater with this, and removing power wires away from speaker wires, and being tidy-er, but like I said, I was just wanting to get everything out of the box, before it goes back in the box to move.

I myself and MANY others here would state that the most important matching you can do is with the fronts and center speakers.The soundstage from Left Center Right is supposed to be seamless.It will be hard to match your fronts with a different brand then you have now. The price actually wound up being about $80. I did not know that the centers had to match the front. Good to know. I was about to just hunt for one that looked right and said what I wanted, but I didn't know it was as easy as just matching.

Well, I got it all in today, and as Jamie suggested, I got the center to match as well, in total it cost about $300 for the fronts and center, and it sounds good. I popped in a Godsmack cd and listened to "Voodoo" because of the bongos, drums and high cymbal and singing pitch, to get a full range of what I got going here, and the center is very well made. It Gets the mid-range and highs very well, and then the fronts pick up the bass a little too well, I may have to tone it down a bit, then of course the subwoofer utilizes all the other lower frequencies these aren't getting. I must say, I'm happy I bought them. They're not extremely high end or anything, but I wasn't looking to spend a lot. The construction of the floor speakers is pretty solid. The mdf they're made out of seems a little on the thin side, and the speakers are heavy so I'm hoping it's thicker than I think. The speakers themselves look great and I have no issue leaving the dust covers off to look at them. They definitly match with the center.

I can't wait till the end of the month when I move to Washington and set all this stuff up nice the way I usually do things. I'm tempted too much to clean up all the wiring and install my nice wiring and component rack and all that, but I know I should wait.
