My box/post just got sheared off

I just went to check the mail to find nothing, not even the post. Upon further investigation I found the mailbox ~10 feet away and the post ~6 ft away under a little snow.

The pole was snapped off at the base and split. This is no normal pole, it was a 6 inch thick hardwood trunk buried into the ground.

Since there was no car wreckage and given that it was sheared at the base, the bastard driving the snow plow must of got it. Why the hell was he so far off the road? You can park a full size car between the mailbox and the road.

Ya know, if you buried a 12" diameter concrete form 6' into the ground and set a 6" diameter steel pipe in the center filled to the top with concrete, covering that with a hollowed out timber or a box-frame with the mailbox on top would make him think about how much fun he's having if he hit yours again. If you do it right, you might just get him to stop on a dime.

Sure would be fun to watch. From a distance.:D

The plow didn't hit it, the flying snow from the plow did.
Check the bottom of the post, I'll bet it's rotted.
Happened to me twice.:)

I'm rather certain it was the plow. Now that it's light out I gathered up the pieces and took a picture. This post is only about 8 years old. It replaced a 4x4 post that got destroyed back when ******** drove around trashing mailboxes with baseball bats. Idea being hardwood post in ground = ******* breaks his back hitting it with a bat.

As a side note, I think I'm missing some pieces.

It was a solid Hedge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedge_tree#Uses

Just stick with a 4x4, they hit it once, they'll do it again....

report it to the city/village and they should pay for it

I think a white oak 12" x 12" would do it. It's rot resistant, hard as he!! and I think it would get their attention.

Or, 12" x 12" Ipe.

Had that happen before. It's life. I think the plow drivers try to take out as much stuff as they can for points and take out road signs to guarantee work in spring replacing the signs!

My parents have a post made of galvanized pipe. But it can rotate so when the plow hits it, it just rotates around. The base is a good 5 feet off the road and in their yard so it can't get hit or if it does, the plow driver should get fired.

There are a couple of houses nearby thar get smoked every winter. To cold to dig in the frozen tundra so he rigged up a post in an old plastic 55 gallon barrel surrounded by sand/gravel. If it gets hit, the barrel gets hit first and moves out of the way. Pain to pick up but the post and mailbox stay in good condition.

But it has to be a points thing with the plow drivers. We had a similar setup in highschool. Birds are high points because they are hard to hit. Whales were the maximum cause if can hit one with your car...
