Have ordered and am waiting on the URC MX-850 to arrive.
Can it be programmed by Learning the codes from my old remotes, or does it have to be connected to a PC before it can be programmed?
Thanks in advance

Thanks for your reply. I downloaded the User Manual, but it only explains how to use the URC after it has been programmed by a professional :(

Can anyone offer me a short explanation on how (for example) I would copy the remote codes of non-brandname portable DVD player into the URC MX-850 by using a computer, since I apparently cannot place the two remotes head-to-head and press the LEARN button like I could on the MX-500 :confused:
Surely this is a giant step backwards.

the remote will learn also, but it still has to be connected to you pc/laptop. There are hundreds of brands and codes for you to use. Which DvD player? You will need to learn to use the software in order to setup the remote.

Yes but how does one learn to use the software if there in no PDF instruction programming manual. The only PDF I can find is how to operate the MX-850 after it has been programmed.

This should get you started...

Open the software and go File>New

Select Empty- No Devices. Click OK.

Ok next you want to create and name devices. These are the components you are going to be controlling with the remote.

Click the icon the arrow is pointing to. This will pop up...

I like to put the devices on the second page. You wont really need to get into this area of the remote under normal circumstances. Dont just call them "DVD" or "CABLE" or else you will get confused later on. Use something that tells you that its the component and not what you want to do.

Once you have your devices created we need to add the IR codes for those devices. Click on this button..

This comes up..

Under the drop down menu at the top you can select which one of your devices you are adding the codes to. The next one down you have the category of devices that are pre loaded into the program. So for example for a reciever you would select "Audio", for a DVD player you would select "DVD" etc.. Then once your in the proper category, you select your brand, And then look for your model. Many models have the same IR codes so if your specific model is not there do not fret. Try one that looks the closest. For example if you had a Denon AVR1708, Try the codes for the 1707 instead.

If your device is not listed you can always create it, Along with the buttons you will need to use it, And then learn the IR codes from the remote that came with the component. I do not really go into how to do that here, But can if requested to.

Anyway, Now you want to start adding the buttons for what you want the remote to do. Everybody kindof has their own way of doing this, Its all preference but this is just to give you an idea how to use the program so we'll start here.

click this button.

This comes up:

I have already added in what I want to do with the remote as you can see on the left hand side on the MAIN page. So for example we can watch cable or DVD... This is different than adding devices so do not do this at the time when your adding devices.

Now that I have my devices, and my buttons I can go ahead and start adding in macros. You'll notice a box on the right hand side near the bottom, To start select the button you want the macro to be recorded on. as you can see I have selected the DVD button. Now to begin recording your macro's click the little round button..

Once this turns red whenever you select a button it will pop up in that box, You go through and find the buttons you want to put into your macro. I like to use the stuff on the left hand side, You can go through the different pages and find what you want then just press the corresponding button on the on screen remote. So here I have added in all the commands I want the macro to perform...

Once you have the macros in you'll want the remote to automatically go to the device's page in the remote, For this you want to press the "Goto page" button which is just to the right of that little clock looking one. Then just hit the save button to save your macro.

If you want to learn a new IR code you need to first get your buttons in there, but once thats done its real easy to learn, There is this second box to the right that has a learn icon. You just select the button you want to learn your code on, Then press this button..

It kinda talks you through how to do it. I reccomend testing your learned codes before you sit down and try it out because quite often they do not work right the first time. It just depends, Some do some dont. Also when your learning a code, Just press the button down Once for a couple seconds. dont sit there pressing it like 50 times otherwise You can run into problems once in a while.

Another important step is your punch through's Mainly all you'll need this for is to keep your volume and mute buttons operating the same device no matter what page your on. So for example if you in TV and you press mute it mutes your reciever and not your TV.. The button you click to do this is the 7th one over from the right at the top. Forgot to make an image for that. Its the one with the buttons that are stacked on top of eachother looking.

Just hit select all on the left side, Then under Volume/Mute select reciever, or whatever it is you want to be doing the volume.

Hope that helps. Theres alot of details missing but it can get you the basics. You'll probably just have to learn the program like everyone else does. By playing around with it and making mistakes. It may be a bit overwhelming and frustrating at first but once you get the concept of how to program the remote it will all just click and you'll be able to do it in no time.. Of course if your not doing this as a side buisness that may not be too great but it really isint that hard. You'll get it down
