Musical Subwoofer - Please Help

Hi guys,

Right now I’m having a junior sub from Sunfire. I bought it because before it fit well to my small space with ORB satellite. Now I move to new and bigger space (10’ x 13’) and upgrade my speakers from ORB satellite to Vienna Acoustics Haydn bookshelf. After I connect speakers/sub to my Denon AVR-4802r, the sound, especially bass is not really good.

Now I think I should upgrade my subwoofer too. I’m looking for tight (not boomy like my Sunfire junior sub), clean, accurate, deep bass and SMALL FOOT PRINT subwoofer for my stereo music system and probably for home theater system later when I save enough money. I tried to listen to REL, Infinity, and Martin Logan and I like Martin Logan GROTTO the most. In the meantime, when I search on internet, lots of people mention a new SVS (SB12 Plus) and Velodyne (SPL-800R).

Since this SVS is sold directly online, so I have no way to audition it. If anyone on this forum has any chance to listen to these three, can you let me know your opinion and suggestion.

I hope I can get the great one, so I will stay with it for long time and save money to buy other audio equipments.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I have the Velodyne SPL-1000R and like it just fine, although it was a bit more expensive than the Internet Direct brands. Hsu and SVS have a large following in these forums, too, and make great products. Bottom line- try to audition as many of these subs as you can. There are lots of very competitive models out there.

Also look at the Martin Logan Dynamo

This is the best small sub I have heard with music. It is sealed, tight and very adjustable. The above poster is straight up right as well, those Velodyne SPL's are great. You can get a Dynamo for around $600. The SPL's will be more, probably about twice as much, but are great as well. And for sure don't forget about SVS's new SB-12Plus. It has received great reviews and is a powerhouse as well. Probably your best bet "Bang for buck".

I just upgraded from an Infinity RS sealed sub to the SB12+. I find the SB12+ to be much more controlled and defined, with plenty bass. In my room, it gets down to about 23 hz before rolling off. (still working on dailing it in w/ REQW) It won't give you chest imploding bass, but is does a good job for home theater. My room is much larger than yours, (15x23 and partially open to a kitchen), so I bet to will fill your room nicely. Shipping for me was only $28, so even to send it back (which I won't!), I would be out $56. I was a bit leery buying a sub, unheard, but the reviews and the service I got from SVS convinced me that it was worth a $60 risk to try one. For me, I listen to music (or music dvd's) much more than movies (80% music/20% movies). Email SVS with your needs, room volume and configuration, listening preferences, etc. and they will point you to the right sub for your budget. I am glad I did.
