Musical instrument woofers in my home speakers

Hello all,
This is my first ever post on this forum. I have learned a lot from lurking here but now I have a question. I recently won an auction for a set of ESS AMT1's and discovered that the original 10" woofers have been replaced with Peavey 121-4's, musical instrument woofers. So my question is what is the difference between home audio and instrument speakers?

Welcome to the forum.

I don't know that you can make any blanket statements about the differences. What you can say is that almost certainly, the woofer in there now is not close to having the same parameters as the original woofers in terms of excursion, free air resonance, impedance, etc.

The ESS-1 can be a very nice speaker. I'd do some research into getting something pretty close to the original parms.

Musical Instrument speakers Vs audio speakers.

Thanks bpape,
I have the original woofers coming to me that I'll have to refoam but I've heard that the bass was lacking with them.
Anyone else have any input on the subject?

I cannot think of any difference. As long as the speaker response is flat within +/- 3dB specifications, it should be ok to use.

Happy Holidays

Thanks for the input and sorry for the slow reply. I've aquired a set of Ohm F's that need repair so I've been distracted. Eveybody have a happy holiday season.

As bpape indicated, most likely it will be different as it is a different driver, period.
If the old doesn't have enough low end, you need a good sub and run that speaker as a 'small' speaker.

Sub woofer? Good idea but I'm still confused about the guitar woofer Vs the audio woofer. Both are 4 ohm. The guitar speaker actually seems to go lower than what I remember the originals to, but is kind of muddy sounding to me. I'd really like to get that tight, defined kind of bass that I get from my Paradigm's but there doesn't seem to be a lot of replacement choices when it comes to a 4 ohm 10" woofer. I guess I could replace the crossover to accommodate an 8 ohm 10" woofer but that's a subject that's over my head and good for a new thread.
So physically are the two types of woofers the same? Are the voice coils the same? Are the mags normally bigger on guitar speakers? Anyone know?

These are the speakers themselves, right? I was talking about a stand alone, powered subwoofer? A good one.

Yeah, I know that you were referring to a stand alone sub-woofer but my original question wasn't about getting more bass, I wanted to know about the difference between a normal loudspeaker woofer Vs a bass guitar amp woofer like the Peavy's I found in my ESS AMT1's that I purchased off ebay.
I have the original 10" woofers that I could refoam and put back in the cabs if I wanted too but I just wondered if there's a physical difference in the way they are built. Are the cones, voice coils, spiders, magnets, etc. any different?

Something will be different to cause them to have different TS parameters. I don't build them nor play with them but you can bet they are different acoustically speaking.
So, depending on what you are really after and if both sides have the same driver, at least you will have a symmetrical response.
Try it.
