I just bought a Yamaha htr-5990 reciever (don't even have speakers yet). I was reading the manual and I don't see a way to enable just the front mains and a sub for 2.1 when listening to music. It has pure direct mode for just the fronts. Is it even possible to get 2.1? I'm used to the bass I get from my 2.1 computer speakers, which just can't be reproduced in a tower (at least not one that I can afford).

If and when you get your front mains you should be able to choose 2.0 if you select large as your mains. With some set up's choosing small would work best if you have a sub connected for 2.1.

as a fellow Yamaha oner; set the mains to 'small' and subwoofer to 'on', then put the reciever in 'stereo' mode.

Depending on your sub, you might be able to run the L/R outs to the sub's passive crossover, then to the speakers, effectively giving you a pair of full range speakers.

Yep, pretty much every multichannel receiver on the market works like this. 2.1 isn't a "mode", it is what you will get automatically if you do what no.5 said.

It sure is. :)

In your manual, turn to page 40 and follow the instructions at the top on the right hand side by repeatedly pressing the Stereo button until '2ch Stereo' appears on the receiver's display.

You'll also want to set all your speakers to be Bass Managed, i.e. all low frequency content beneath a stipulated limit directed to the sub so as to reduce the burden placed on the speakers and amplifer. That maybe done by turning to page 76 in your manual and setting LFE/Bass Out to SWFR, all speakers to Small and, initially at least, Bass cross over (on the following page of the manual) to 80Hz.

Voilla! ;)

Everyone is correct. The only time you don't get sound is in Pure Direct or Direct Stereo. Every other listening mode will give you sound from the sub as long as you have the other speaker's set to small.

Fair enough.... I was looking for the easy "2.1" setting. Just as long as it can be done!

Thanks,
