Multiroom Audio setup with phone control

I have Bose 791's installed in the bathroom and living room hooked up to a receiver in my nightstand. I want to upgrade to one that I can control with my phone and stream music to it with Bluetooth as well. I was considering the Yamaha R-N602 but don't want to pay $600 for what is essentially a secondary audio system. I also considered the Yamaha R-N303 but I heard that the amps aren't as good so it will be more likely to shut off to protect itself from overheating.

I know Bose has a lot of haters but I was also considering the Bose SoundTouch SA-5 as it seems to offer what I need as well and is expandable with other Bose products in the future as I have an old set of the 151 outdoor speakers a friend gave me a while back.

I have heard about Sonos but to connect to my existing speaker set up I would need two $500 Connect AMPs which doesn't seem like a good option.

Any advice, pros/cons? Other alternatives I haven't considered?

A big problem you have is that Bose does not publish any meaningful specifications. Might not be a big deal if you’re “keeping it all in the family” with Bose gear from top to bottom, but when you start “mixing and matching” you run into issues. For instance, with your 791s, we don’t know if they’re 8-ohm or 4-ohm. It’s really hard to pick an amplifier without knowing that information, especially for running multiple sets like you are.

Seems like the 791's are rated 6 ohms 50W IEC continuous power handling. Which is kind of weird cause who makes 6 ohms speakers? I always see 4 or 8.

I wouldn’t give much credence to that spec – no telling what it means. No one rates impedance as “continuous power handlng.”

Buy a last generation AppleTV and use AirPlay. It's discontinued, so a used one should be pretty cheap. If you use an Android, buy a Roku- even if you only use it for music, it's still only about $30 for the bottom of the line and it works with Play To. If you don't have an optical input on the receiver, you'll need to convert.
