I bought a Rotel RMB 1066 (60w x 6) for my dad's pipe-in music ...
suffice to say, this amp can do 150w x 3 (bridged)

2.0 listening: no level matching: no blind test

I did some listening with my Yamaha rx-v640 (85w x 2 RMS) some pop, r&b songs ... took note of what I heard and felt.

I removed the speakers from the yammy and transferred them to the Rotel ...
played the same songs again.

right from the get go, the music was now louder ... (this is no surprise, because the Rotel is double the wattage)
I brought the volume down again, but this time my speakers can now do the low end louder and better ...

I have always complained that my floorstanding speakers couldn't do what my older kenwood speakers did (10" woofer) ... which was to boom the bass.
$h1t now I can!

call it what you want, but if you guys want plug and play instant improvement of music listening, go buy yourself a stronger amp. (no level matching and stuff) Im talking about out of the box performance.

Rotel ROCKS!

I did the same thing, and its a noticable difference for me. I got the RB 991 200 w/ch and used the preouts on my Yamaha 5280 for my front left and right channels. Gives me a clearer stereo sound than I had with the Yamaha.

......Mike, good report and very good pictures....a larger pool of continuous watts from quality amp sections certainly makes a difference in the low end, and usually full-range....but, I can't help but envy guys who never upgrade from an inexpensive receiver and inexpensive speakers....they certainly have a lot more money to go to other areas.....

Step In The Right Direction...

I think the more manufacturers keep putting decent pre-pros into their receivers, the more you're going to see HT/music enthusiasts going in this direction.

I think the majority would be using separates if it weren't for the cost factor. This type of 'upgrade' is a great solution, whether it be interim until they "graduate" to separates or permanent if they are completely satisified... -TD

It's a double-edged sword. With the critical ear comes the burden of expensive components. Tough job, but somebody's gotta do it... :D -TD

I agree, before this, I was gonna wing it with a receiver and concentrate on my 2.0 bedroom setup. now I have to buy amps for my HT!

I'm looking at the Rotel RMB-1077 class d amp (100w x 7)

I have a music system, but I mostly use my main system for critical music listening and I selected my components as such because I am a music kind of guy, however movies have the benefit of sounding good too...:D Quality amplification can go a long way, especially when paired up with speakers that can make use of a lot of power.

yeah, I listened to the HK AVR7300 playing Kung Fu Hustle ...
there was a scene where the gang boss was gonna torch a mother and child, he threw the lighter at the doused people and some guy caught the lighter.

now, over there, it sounded like the zippo was really in front of me. I tried the same scene at home but didn't get that effect, maybe I'll try again with this amp.

Given that the RXV-640 is only rated 75W per channel 20-20000 Hz and a freq response of 10-100,000 -3 dB, you will most likely hear much improved effect with the Rotel amp.

It doesn't have to be that way. Spend an evening or two browsing ebay for some mighty 70's amps, and you'll do as good or better than that Rotel. I've seen this massive Sansui go for under $300 on ebay. This thing approaches 80lbs, and is only 2 channels.

PENG,

agreed, just about anything is gonna beat this yammy, just trying to make a comparison with the "you don't need strong watts scientific theory" because my floorstanders are 91db sensitive ... I'll try connecting these floorstanders to my HK3480 (120w x 2) and see if the effect is the same.

on a side note, the 640 is rated to 85w RMS

I am a huge fan of outlaw sepperates. The best option if you are looking to get into sepperates on the cheap.

their amps are made by ati, and 200wx5 is awsome. (true AB of course)

If they are so cheap and great why don't you have one?

He prob does. That is one heck of an amp. I doubt you could find anything that even comes close to the performance of that unit on today's market (cost X3)

Please tell us how you make out with the HK. My guess is, it should do quite well.
