Ok. I am lucky to be starting out with just the new tv. It is a Samsung 52" Tft LCD Model LN-T5271F. It is progressive scan and 1080P. This I can understand.

But everything else.....??

I need a receiver. I have Comcast Cable with an HD Box. No New DVD player yet.
My ? is mostly about the video portion of the AV receiver. If my LCD is already 1080p, and progressive scan , WHAT DO i NEED TO GET?

HERE IS WHAT i AM READING i WILL NEED:

HDMI Switching HDMI Repeating or Repeater
3 HDMI inputs
HDMI Upscaling
HDMI Upconversion
HDMI 1.3

What unit could do all so that I do not have to worry about the future? I am not really a tv or dvd buff but would like to be capable of it all.

Also, what DVD Player would i add in the future as I just have a basic one? Or is the basic one going to be ok with whatever upscaling is?

Speakers?
Thanks so very much for the help.

Upscaling is tricky, if your dvd player or tv has a good scaler, then that feature becomes irrelavant. IMO the video portion of an avr should only be a concern if the later isnt true. Conversion will not be an issue unless your hd box or dvd player will not have hdmi. You might want to consider speakers first, than start to think avr. Speakers are going to be a critical portion of your ht system.

How about a budget for starters on the receiver and (5.1?) speaker system?

In general, you can get a receiver with the features you need for $4-500, a nice 5.1 speaker system for $1k, and a good upscaling DVD player $150 or a PS3 for $400.
