Right now I am useing a budget Dalite pull-down screen with a Panasonic 100 model 720P LCD unit. I have a Scaler on its way to hopefully improve the SD signal but I am really happy with DVD (Lexicon) and HD cable (Time Warner)
the Projector is 6000.1 contrast and I think 3000 Lumies but I never need anything more the ECO mode to be very happy even with 2 60w bulbs on if they are aimed right.....ofcourse dark is better.
My question is, how much better will picture get with a more expensive screen (manual pull 90in)?
Up till a disability I was in the print industry operating 6 color press then moved into management and design so I feel I have a really critical eye for picture quality, and the Sony XBR WEGA 34 tube HDTV in my living room is alot better by a fair margin as far as I am concerned.
So how much better can it get?, would a $1000 range screen give me huge gains in performance.....by huge I am talking atleast 25% better.
Thanks for opinions and experiences.

Hi,

It depends on how you qualify an improvement in performance.

There are three things you can check:
- Screen fabric planarity -> to minimise distortion in the projected image
- contrast
- brightness

What doesn't work is spending more on the electrical version of your manual screen for example.

What does work is:
-> Going for a better build (which would improve planarity)
-> Going for a higher gain fabric (which would increase brightness of the image)
-> Going for a high contrast fabric (which would improve black levels)

If you want to focus on brightness for example, going from a 1.0 gain fabric to a 1.2 or 1.3 gain fabric would improve performance by 20 or 30% respectively. But, that's only the brightness side of things.

I would check with a reseller close to you to see different models and the performance difference.

Good luck,

Otto
