Movie Library hidden or on display?

My wife and I are buying our first home. I am slowly brainwashing her into becoming a HT fan. She wants our 700+ collection on display, I would like to turn a closet into a nice walk-in DVD, BD library. Any suggestions? Is displaying your library cheesy looking? I want to build custom shelves to showcase them. Does anyone have Pics so I could get some ideas on how you store your movies?

I'm a fan of hidden, but that's mostly because I don't find DVD cases to be all that aesthetic. I used to keep mine behind two doors in my entertainment center, but I just bought a new stand that is completely open - so I also need to figure out where to store mine. I'll probably get something that keeps them enclosed, probably a wooden cabinet of some kind.

I have mine in a rack beside my front right speaker, perpendicular to the seating position. They are not that visible, but they don't look great. However, my HT room is so god damn ugly they are the least of my concerns.

PPS: Wrong Forum.

That's funny!!! If you even get stuck watching "The Holiday" with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black. When they switch houses she has these huge custom shelves built into an entertainment center, showcasing all her movies. It looks classy. She does movie trailers as a career, check it out I think it looks good, my wife wants me to build something similar. So I'm still on the fence. I just needed to hear the advice and opinions from MEN, if you know what I mean.

If you showcase it right, anything can look good. Like Quagmire and his pubic hair. When it looked like a Q, it was ballin'.

PPPS, Still wrong forum. Wake up Mods.

+1 Hidden.

I am installing CD\DVD racks behind the door in the study, adjacent to the theater room. Think I have $65 into it for 200+ storage and moulding. I just cut out some sheetrock, screwd the racks into the studs, and put moulding around it. Done!!!

I vote hidden too or at least out of the way.

If you have a dedicated HT room they could be displayed as part of the decor but in a multi purpose room like a living room I think they just add clutter.

I don't really collect movies but have about 600 CDs. I don't showcase them in the living room. Instead I have a rack that is in my office.

Figures. I have a couple of dvd racks against one wall open. I find it makes it easy to look through them for a movie on a slow evening. I do have the cd collection hidden in the den on a turnstile type storage unit. But with 400 plus albums on the server I rerely if ever look through the cd's.

I like to have some that are easily accessible and would normally vote for hidden, but the BDs don't really have a home, so I have them all out on display for now as you can see in the MY HT link. Funny when I look at those again, I noticed that in the first pic I had maybe 10 BDs and now I am running out of room for them.

my vote is for hidden and here's why:
Dvd's don't look very good next to each other their spines showing because it is usually just a mix of random colors. The spines are so small of DVD cases and and so that you can get a bunch in a row, which means a bunch of different colors, which just looks sloppy in my opinion. I think they look nice when they are in a series that all features similar spine design. this makes for a uniform and organized look. I really confirmed my feeling for this with my friends DVD rack. He has series on one side, and movies on the other. The movies look like crap, but most of the series look good. We had a whole discussion about it actually :D

So unless you enjoy the jumbled colors and designs of DVD spines, hidden is the way to go. And lets face it, if they are not hidden, they are just stealing attention from looking at your killer system :D

Hi, the nice thing about having the collection on show is so that guests can easily choose between the selection, with the ensuing arguments about which title wins. :p

I know from experience!

This is one of the nicer solution I've seen:

+700 is a lot though. And another issue is the differing size between DVD and BD cases.

Looks like they're $7 apiece.
