Movie Industry and Tech Companies Working Together?

IBM, Intel Corporation, Microsoft, Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, The Walt Disney Company, and Warner Bros. Studios today announced the formation of Advanced Access Content System License Administrator (AACS LA), a cross-industry effort that develops, promotes and licenses technology designed to enhance digital entertainment experiences.

This technology is geared towards creating a solution for Digital Rights Management (DRM) but also takes into account fair use needs of the individual user. The new licensing specification will take into account users' rights to make authorized recordings and port content to home-networked and portable devices. The generally available, licensable spec will be delivered later this year and is the first indication that Hollywood may not take the same route as the RIAA (who apparently feels that suing individual users is the best way to address file sharing and copyright violation issues.)

Is this the solution we've all been waiting for? We won't know until more specs get released, but the direction is sound and the relevant topics and issues appear to be on the table - and that's a heck of a good start.
