thought i'd like to share this. I found out what kind of speakers are used at movie theatres (the ones you pay $50 to go to a movie for  )

JBL Cinema Series

Look pretty nice for a "behind the screen" setup. I wonder where you'd buy 'em.

Hello Cygnus,

The JBL systems are great speakers but not designed for a home based situation. The depth on the horns alone are typically a few feet if not more depnding on the size of the system.

The 4000 series (4675) is the most commonly used cinema speaker JBL produces along with 8330, 8340 surround speakers. You will typically only see those 3 way systems used in large showcase houses.

Klipsch, EV, Eastern Acoustics Works, Smart, QSC, also make great systems as well that get used quite often in cinemas. Even Boston Acoustics dabbled in the cinema market along time ago.

All newer Regal Cinema sights use Klipsch speakers exclusively. Most of the entire Edwards theatre chain uses JBL. AMC uses a mixture of alot of stuff but lately they seem to be sticking with JBL.

You can pick these up from most any cinema supply company.(Special Order) Its not something you walk in and listen to. You could probably do a dealer search on their sight.

Cheers

I'm not saying i want to buy any! I hav no where near the amount of money or are able to get that amount of money in ten years! :)

I just thought it was pretty neat, however I have heard from people that their home HT setups sund much better then theatres that use these speakers. I beleive them (such as Clint), hehe.

Well I know the stuff that my friend puts in his theaters he gets for like $150 each speaker, just some generic brand that uses a horn tweeter and I think a 12" woofer, they are way too big to be used in a home theater system unless you have tons of space. Sounds pretty good, but by I wouldn't consider it expensive by any means.

I will second this, they use these at a very large theater her. Sawgrass Cinema 23. Yes that means they have 23 different movie theaters in on building.

Actually I find some of these systems when properly set up and calibrated can sound incredible if not better than a majority of HT systems. IMO a high end cinmea system with proper dynamic headroom can offer transparency, and a deep visceral impact that most HT's can't.

Alot of people here will disagree with this. But if they could sit in a theatre such as the Arclight Cinema (Hollywood Ca.) they would be seriously impressed. This system is the finest system I have ever heard along with the Dolby screening room here in San Francisco. :D :D :D
