Few consumers can spot the difference between plasma and LCD picture quality. But what's coming down the proverbial pike is different indeed, enough to impress the jaded enthusiast and bowl over the casual observer or so the pundits say. We're talking OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) here and Sony is about to release it's first shot, though a small one, at the next generation of flat screen TVs.

Pricing info would be good... But it's all still vaporware. Anything that is more than 2 months out might as well be 2 years out for the reality of CE product rollouts.

From what I have heard, these things are truly phenomenal to see, but at 11" I simply have no use for it at all. I don't see myself getting another display under 32" in my life, and if I do it will be in a location where LCD is perfectly acceptable.

About the only use I see for an 11" screen is in the car or the kitchen... maybe the bathroom.

But, if it carries a $1,000+ price tag, then why bother?

I remember reading about this technology not too long ago and in the long run it should replace current flat options. I do have my doubts about release in 09 though. Last I heard they had a problem with the life of items using OLED being limited to 3 years or so and to many consumers would not have that.

If it carries a tag at that price some people will buy it causing increase in production until price drops just like when a 32 inch flat that looked horrible costed $10,000.

The one to keep an eye on is Canon, their 55 inch SED is only being kept out due to patent issues that hopefully will be resolved, if they get lucky they'll have a viable panel release within a year. Of course pricing at this time is nebulous, neither Sony, Canon nor Toshiba has said a thing. As per the article Sony will not be making "money" on the first generation 11 inch units, but knowing these guys and their engineering this stuff might be closer than we think.

Neither Sony nor Canon as far as I can tell in my research have published specs, but from I what I was able to glean it's a significant amount, I'm still doing a bit of background research, if I get any numbers I'll post.

To get a high contrast ratio all you need is decent output divided by a very very low number (i.e. the lowest resolution dark reading you can get...)

For example:

100/.01 = 10,000:1
100/.0001 = 1,000,000:1

That would be interesting contrast indeed, but I was after power consumption, usage, 100 W AC power? I tried to get LCD power from back of displays in store but it is so hard to turn them around enough, in stealth. The help is no help in stores.
If this device is very low in power consumption, over time and quantity in homes would make a difference. Computers at home are about 150 watts. It adds up over a 24 hr day left on. Times a city, etc....

OLED, I'll see if I can find number for SED, since this technology hasn't been released to consumers yet, relevant numbers aren't easy find.

This is a news release from the Canon site. Looks like SED is delayed indefinitely, all they say is that it will not be here in Q4 of 2007 and give no other dates
