Motorola HDPVR. Poor sound

I have a Motorola HDPVR model PVR3416.

I have it connected to my TV via HDMI cable and all is good when I have sound and picture going through my TV only.

But with my home theater system, it doesn't sound good at all. I have a fiber optic cable going directly from the PVR output to the input of the home theater amplifier. (My amp doesn't have an HDMI connection). The 5.1 surround sound is there but poor quality of sound in addition of having to turn the amplifier up a lot to get any decent volume. I don't see any way to turn the volume of the PVR up although it does state in the manual to do that but my concern is sound quality.

I tried a different fiber optic cable but no difference. My blu-ray player, CD player all have excellent sound. Also good sound when I run out of the TV and into the amplifier with left and right audio cables but of course no 5.1 surround with that set up.

Are these Motorola's junk or any suggestions as what to do.

After the diagnosis of what you've done I'd exchange it for another one. I don't know about that DVR but I never count a product out just because I got one that had an issue out of the box.

If your still wondering, I would go into the menu of the PVR, then setup, then audio setup and see what is selected there. For audio output make sure that either TV speakers is selected or if it is on Advanced the compression should be heavy. If compression is on light you have to crank up the volume on the receiver. Hope this helps....

Thanks but yes, that is how I have it set up. I am going to run L&R audio cables instead of fiber optic and see if that helps. Will post later.
