I am trying to hook up an old vhs player with mono out via RCA to a yamaha htr-5890 reciever. I hooked up the mono cord to the left vhs input on the reciever, but it only comes out the left speaker then.

Do I need to buy a splitter cable, or can i select the reciever to play mono through both speakers for that one input?

Just buy a cheap splitter cable and be done with it. Not more than a couple bucks at Radio Shack.

Jax is right, buy the splitter. Be careful which one you buy at RS. Buy one with good RCA male ends. Their cheap ones come lose from the weight of the cable.

You should always "cover" both right and left inputs for the source you want to use. Prevents the open channel from picking up stray interference. It's the same reason they use the wye connector for subwoofer inputs.

I'm seriously doubting this is possible. Granted, I've seen the little RCA caps, but I think it's gonna take a lot more than a few square millimeters of exposed metal to allow noise into the system.

By "cover" I mean either split the mono input or use a stereo input. You can get a hum from the "open" RCA terminal. It's just like getting a hum if you try to insert or remove a RCA cable.

On the topic of covering unused rca inputs to prevent interference:

I was given a set of those Cardas Caps. They are little nickel caps that fit over the input jack. The result from using them....no difference whatsoever.
