I have the HDAD (stereo only DVD-audio), of I Robot, which was OOP for a long time but recently re-released. It may just be the best sounding recording in any format, any genre, that I own. I don't own the 200g vinyl disc of this album so I have never done a direct comparison between the two, but I suspect they would be very close in sound quality.

I have the MOFI 2LP 45rpm releases of Metallica's Kill 'Em All and Master of Puppets and I don't think they sound that great at all.

I have the 2LP 180g release of Faith No More's "Angel Dust" and it sounds excellent.

The guy that runs Better Records doesn't think much about MOFI and he gives some fairly compelling reasons why.

Truth be told my favourite vinyl recordings in my collection so far have nothing to do with whether or not they're 180g, 200g, half-mastered or any other "audiophile" label, so I think he might well be correct.

I've got some MOFI 1/2 speed LPs I bought back in the late '70s ~ early '80s, They're very good, although you have to turn up the volume to get to the same SPL.

Also have some of the newer 180, 200 gram LPs that are super clean sounding, and seem to have a deeper, more complex sound.

On the other hand, most of my older LPs sound quite good as well. They just needed a good cleaning.
Of coarse there are some that were just plain mastered wrong, like the infamous hole in the middle recordings that have nothing common to both channels, thus no phantom center. Or others that have the singer's voice in the middle but all of the intruments to one side, those really sound stupid.

There seems to be plenty to chose from, plus one can always buy a pre-amp with a phono input.
A word to the wise, stay away from a Denon. I had an 80w Denon stereo receiver that had a phono input and a sub out. That phono pre-amp was a piece of junk, always had to have the VC around 0db.
I replaced it with a HK Citation pre-amp/100w power amp and now the VC is turned way down, compared, and have better sound. A difference of only 20w should make no difference, so the problem had to be the Denon phono pre-amp.
