No DVD players play MKV files, this is simple fact. You'll need to convert them to DVD format. I like ConvertXToDVD tool - easy to use and works well.

so i need to convert it first rite? how can i convert it to the best quality possible (lossless if possible) for a single layer dvd?

Why not just hook up a Western Digital TV Live to your system and play your MKVs from an external hard drive?
