Mixing speaker brands

If i want to add more speakers or a subwoofer, can I choose from another brand them my current brand?

I have Ikon speakers, I heard that Ikon is a sub company of Definitive Technologies, so would it be ok if i grabbed (for example) an SVS subwoofer and 2 definitive bookshelf speakers?

Timbre-matching is most important with the mains and center, then sides (mostly if you use sacd or dvd-a). The sub is least important, if not negligible, as the frequency response is limited in a sub. So get the best one you can!

I'm no "expert", but people go with third-party subs all the time, so that would definitely be ok. Going with another manufacturer for your surrounds is less ideal, but my impression is that you can get away with it for surrounds.

My understanding is you definitely want the same manufacturer for the L/C/R speakers.

There is no timbre matching for a sub to the other speakers. There is no reason why you can't buy a sub of another brand, and if you look to the internet direct companies, you will get a lot more sub for your money in nearly all cases.

From my own experience, I'm auditioning now 2 Paradigms as main fronts, + a JBL center and tell you what, they do blend perfectly fine!
Surrounds & surr. back are all JBL's as well. My .2 cents.

Cheers / Avliner.

Mismatched speakers will still blend, but they will never be quite right. I used to have Minis up front with a CC170 and I felt it sounded great...until I bought my CC370 and 5s and heard what a correct match really sounded like.
