MSNBC has an interesting piece about Blu-ray celebrating its victory against the HD-DVD format.

Although the last person I heard utter the words "Mission Accomplished" has had a hard time wiping the egg off of his face.

Personally, I would like to see HD DVD end up as the winner somehow, not because I have a preference between the two, but because at the beginning of this thing, the Blu-ray PR machine and fan boys were soooo much more annoying than the HD DVD camp.

...or am I just being vindictive?

I agree 100% with you, that and I HATE Sony. The one thing that bothers me (and actually some not so AV heavy friends even) is tha Blu-Ray is STILL an unfinished product. If they win, its almost like a sham. In that article the guy form warner even said that HD-DVD is more complete, and cheaper to make. That should make them the better format in my eyes.

If it is cheaper to make then they are gouging the consumer since the disc prices should be the SAME or only a little more, not the same price or higher than BD right? Right now the HD DVD prices are about 30-50% more than the SD DVD version.

Profile 1.1, which is out now, is called the "full profile" so it is complete. 2.0 adds web based features.

Youre absolutly right about the pricing. I have no idea what the actuall cost is to manufacture either format is, I was just going off of what was said in the article.

As for the profiles, wasnt BR always suposed to have web based features? Dosent HD-DVD already have all that up and working? How can 1.1 be complete if they have more stuff to add with 2.0?

Now, if the media had actually BEEN cheaper, I think it would have been adopted right away. There are of course costs involved in the remastering and all, but they can't toot their horn saying it is cheaper and not pass that on to the consumer. If by cheaper they mean the manufacturers can make more money per disc because it doesn't cost them as much to manufacture, well that isn't helping the consumer or making a case for their product.

By "final" I think they meant all the basic features that all discs would be capable of - not all discs will have web based features, so 2.0 is not a requirement for all players while 1.1 now is. For discs with web based features, those features simply won't work on a player that doesn't support them, but the movie and other supplements will.

Yeah but they will have nothing to be fanbois about now so nobody will have to listen to it.

I don't want HD DVD to win because nobody needs Microsoft that involved in one more consumer market....

Amen on that. I'm not a big fan of Sony, but I am a much lesser fan of
Microsoft. Speaking of "fan", when will Microsoft make a fan for the 360
that doesn't sound like a loud window A/C?
