I have a Mirantz SR 5003 and I realize this is an easy questions, but any help is appreciated?

On the back panel I have 4 sets of binding posts for front speakers, labeled Front A and Front B, each having a Right and Left set of terminals, first off why so many terminals for front R and L speakers??

Second which set should I plan to use for a 7.1 setup with just one front L and one front R speaker?

Thanks

The Set mark "A" is the main set for the main zone (living room).
The Set mark "B" is for the second set for the zone 2 (bedroom or den...).

And for the 7.1 setup, you just follow the instructions from your SR5003 manual, and it should be well indicated (speaker connections). Usually, near the beginning of your instruction manual.

By the way, Congratulations! on your 5003, it is a very sweet receiver for the $.

Thanks Bob, so you can actually have a 7.1 setup and still have a second zone correct? I had an older HK reciever that only allowed the use of a 5.1 with a second zone??

Thanks

According to a quick read of their spec sheet to get full "zone 2" features like different source and volume levels you would need another amp and use the analog outs to have 7.1 and zone 2.

The B speakers are using the same amp channels and source as the A speakers and will work in an application where they were wired to another set of speakers that you could play the same source as the main zone.

Yes I had seen that in the manual, but i am a bit confused because they depict the surround back speakers terminals being used in a zone 2 scenario, and they seem to never depict the Front B speaker terminals being used, so this is what confuses me??

I have a 7.1 system so I think i can hook the front 2 L/R speakers up to the Front "A" terms, and then follow the others as a baisc setup, and use the front "B" speakers as a zone 2. thoughts would this work, since I need the surrond back for a 7.1 system?

Thanks

I have been looking at the 5003 for a while now and I think you should have Speaker A, B and C. So make sure you are connecting things right.

If I read you right you are going to you 2(that is both) L/R for your front in the main room. I dont think you will get a good outcome. Unless I understood you wrong.

This is how was planning to hookup??

Speaker = Reciever

Center = Center (+ and -)
Surrond Back = Surrond back (+ and -)
Surrond = Surrond (+ and -)
Front Right = Front A Right (+ and -)
Front Left = Front A Left (+ and -)

2nd zone

Left speaker = Front B (+ and -)
Right Speaker = Front B (+ and -)

would this work??

Yes, you can have a 7.1-channel setup in your main zone, plus a 2-channel stereo in your second zone.
But when you play them at the same time, your two rear surround speakers become your second zone. So the main zone becomes a 5.1-channel setup now. You have to set your receiver (from the speaker setup menu) for the right configuration(s). Remember, there are only! 7 channel amps. And you need 9 set of speaker binding posts.
And of course when you play them separately, you got the 7.1 and the 2 ch. available in your main zone and zone 2, respectively.

Some receivers have the front channels indicated as set A and set B. The set B is in most cases (95%) for another room (zone).

But if you have an extra amp, then things are better, you just add an extra set of speakers and voila. Two full systems at the same time.

Cheers,

Bob

Instructions in detail on speaker's connections.

This is how was planning to hookup??

Speaker = Reciever

Center = Center (+ and -)
Surrond Back = Surrond back (+ and -)
Surrond = Surrond (+ and -)
Front Right = Front A Right (+ and -)
Front Left = Front A Left (+ and -)

2nd zone

Left speaker = Front B (+ and -)
Right Speaker = Front B (+ and -)

would this work??
Ok, this is how you connect all your speakers on the rear of your nice Marantz SR5003:
.Rear of the SR5003................Rear of the speakers................

Front Left A + = Speaker wire + to the left front speaker.
Front Left A - = Speaker wire - to the left front speaker.

Front Right A + = Speaker wire + to the right frontspeaker.
Front Right A - = Speaker wire - to the right front speaker

Center speaker + = Speaker wire + to the center speaker.
Center speaker - = Speaker wire - to the center speaker.

Surround Left + = Speaker wire + to the left side surround speaker.
Surround Left - = Speaker wire - to the left side surround speaker.

Surround Right + = Speaker wire + to the right side surround speaker.
Surround Right - = Speaker wire - to the right side surround speaker.

Surround Back Left + = Speaker wire + to the left rear surround speaker.
Surround Back Left - = Speaker wire - to the left rear surround speaker.

Surround Back Right + = Speaker wire + to the right rear surround speaker.
Surround Back Right - = Speaker wire - to the right rear surround speaker.

Front Left B + = Speaker wire + to the left speaker of the 2nd room.
Front Left B - = Speaker wire - to the left speaker of the 2nd room.

Front Right B + = Speaker wire + to the right speaker of the 2nd room.
Front Right B - = Speaker wire - to the right speaker of the 2nd room.

* Now you got an extra receiver from Harman Kardon.

You can use it to power the speakers in the 2nd room instead of the Marantz Front B speakers Left and Right.

Here's how:

...Rear of the SR5003............Rear of the Harman Kardon............

Zone 2 Out Left (white) = Interconnect white cable to "CD In" left (white).
Zone 2 Out Right (red) = Interconnect red cable to "CD In" right (red).

Set your receiver (Sr5003) from the speaker setup menu to enable Zone 2.

Set the Input (source) on your Harmasn Kardon to CD.

Would you like me to come over and plug the power cord for you? ;)

What I just type for you, is only because I'm in a pretty good mood today, and it's your lucky day. [Must be because today they just found my 47 million years old grandmother or aunt ancestor] :)

But if you read your instruction manual of your SR5003, it is clearly indicated.
If you don't have a manual, you can download it from Marantz web site.

Cheers,

Bob

Trust me the manual is not that good to describe what you did above. if i did not want to use the HK amp, and just wanted to use the Mirantz, can i set a different source selection for the second zone? Ie. zone A playing the radio and zone B playing a cd, etc>>

Thanks

Marantz, not "Mirantz". ;)

No, the set "B" is the same playing source than the set "A".

But, I believe that if you use the "Back Surround" speakers for the Zone 2, then you can. Only now, your Main Zone will become a 5.1-channel configuration. So you'll have a movie playing in 5.1 from a blu-ray player in your Main Zone, and a music CD playing from your CD or DVD player in the Second Zone. Youpie! :)
You just have to set your 5003 from the speaker menu setup so you designate the "Back Surrounds" as the Zone 2. Voila! ;)
And the Front Speakers set "B", you don't need it anymore, or if you want to coonect another set of speakers in your patio for example, but it will play the same source as your Front Speakers set "A".
And for good measure, it is recommended that you are not playing the set "A" and the set "B" at the same time, as this will lower the impedance at your receiver end by twice, which is very dangerous on your receiver (in particular if your two set of speakers are below 8-ohm loads). I know, I blew some amps in the past just doing that. So, you are warned now.

Please, someone help us if you know more about this (speaker Set A & B), or if I'm wrong (about playing the same source).
But I believe that I'm right. So, your ticket for the Zone 2, different source from the Main Zone, is the "Back Surround" speakers.

Cheers,

LOTR

Note: By the way, thanks for the appreciation of my explanation for speaker connections. Maybe I should write the instruction manuals for several manufacturers. :)
