Thank you everyone for your advice. I'll continue saving to get a better sub, and then probably start thinking of the next big purchase/upgrade.

You could always diy a sub that actually is some furniture she might be more accepting of....end tables are often done for that reason, altho a dual-opposed design might be better if you want stuff to stay still on top :)

I'll continue saving up. The problem will be then convincing my wife that spending $400-$500 on a sub is worth it. I feel like she'll be more open to buying an OLED tv or a new sofa. One way I found of convincing her that a sub works is because if it's positioned by the sofa (if a sub crawl shows it's fine there) it can act as a side table as well (not that I would let her put anything on it once we get it though).
I think that is a very wise choice. There are much better options just by increasing your budget up a few hundred or so. It will be so worth it down the road. However, it is important to keep the wife happy. That way, both you and your new sub do NOT end up in the dog house literally speaking.....LOL!!!!! :):):)

Cheers,

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and I'm currently building my first HT setup ever. Since I have no experience with sub woofers I thought this would be a good place to get some advice from.

I have found a Mirage Prestige S10 in pretty good condition for about $150 on craigslist (might be able to haggle to $120 or so) and I was wondering if it's a good buy or not.
I was considering getting a BIC F12 or maybe a BIC PL-200 II if it goes on sale. But after finding this Mirage sub and reading about it I am unsure if getting it used might be a better idea.
Even though it's an old model it was supposed to be fairly good when it launched and the few posts online I read about it praise it for it's musicality and tightness.

So, do you think it's a good buy or should I just go for a BIC F12 or PL-200 II new? Do you have any other suggestions (my budget is up to $200 or so).
Didn't Mirage get bought out by Klipsch ? and are no longer making anything under the Mirage name ? I have a set of Mirage OS3 towers that our cat knocked over and tore a few of the speaker surrounds. Very hard to get right sized surrounds had to go with what was close to driver size. No exact size to match

Mirage Prestige S10, 10" Sealed sub with 300w amp able to reach and play -3 db at 23hz ?
Somehow I doubt these are real numbers. Even SVS SB1000 with 12" driver and heavy EQ only plays 24hz down.
It’s ported, not sealed.

I’ve owned just about every Mirage product made (and still own about a dozen pairs of their speakers and use the BPS-400 sub to this day) the Prestige series is from a period after Klipsch had purchased the company and moved all production from Canada to China. Andrew Welker had also left the company by than as had one of the guys who went on to found Revel and a few other noted engineers. I would avoid any made in China Mirage products with the exception of the OMD speakers. I’ve seen OM-200 subwoofers sell for $150-$200 locally on CL near me and they’re exponentially more powerful, accurate and of better build quality. That being said I would find a better sub.
