I own a set of Polks TSI500. They sound quite good but I am about to get the Mirage OMD15. Has anyone ever listened to these both speakers and is the OMD a much better sounding and efficient speaker than the Polks in all areas more so the bass area. The original price of the OMD-15 was $1,250.ea when they were made in Canada but they are now made in China and are on sale at Vanns for $399.00. Could this drastic drop in price be that this model is to be discontinued and also a compromise due to a decrease in quality ( i.e drivers and crossovers used ). I forgot to mention that the TSI500 costs$400.00 each and carries 4 6 1/2 drivers while the Mirage has 2 5 1/4 drivers.
Please advise me if i should go with the Mirage.

Thanks

Vanns just buys out inventory from other places and sells them cheap. They do it all the time, so don't use the price to judge the speaker.

Thanks for your input but can someone who has heard any of these speakers help me decide. I have never heard the OMD15 so can anyone who has auditioned these and any of the Polks line tell me the difference in sound quality

I took the bait and got the OMD-15s. They peaked my interest a few months ago at Vanns and when they dropped $100 each it seems like a no-brainer. I had Mordaunt Short Avant 908s for over 5 years that served me very well. At most volumes they sounded great but in my room (bare wood floors) they could get bright at loud volumes and led to fatigue after extended listening periods. I did various amp/ receiver, cable upgrades and minor room treatments which helped but I was still looking for something to catch my eye and ear. My wife decided to redecorate and this gave me a reason/excuse to upgrade because she wanted a darker wood furniture. Thus the Rosewood OMD 15s sit in my living room.
Initial impressions are very positive. They are quite beautiful to look at the design, quality, and workmanship are exceptional. Great binding posts. I only have 20+ hours of break in time on them. They sound much more open than my MS 908s and fill the whole room with sound. You can sit/stand almost anywhere and still get a solid soundstage. They treble is too die for IMHO. Perfect sparkle, clear and not bright or harsh. MS 908s had deep and full bass, but the OMD 15s are much more defined, controlled. Acoustic guitar, male/female vocals, drums sound outstanding. The 908s sounded "thicker." OMD-15s sound more like instruments playing not just the sounds the instruments are making. The sound overall is a little better and a lot different than my previous speakers. I've listened to some high-rez Bluray music and SACDs that I'm very familiar with and the OMD-15s give me a much greater sense of the room or venue the musicians are playing in. My 908s could give me some sharp imaging when playing some Jazz SACDs that felt like the musicians were playing right in front of me. I'm not getting that with the OMD-15s yet. I'm still fine tuning the positioning and hope to see some improvement with break in. BTW, the manual makes a pretty big deal of allowing for break in and care with positioning/fine tuning.
I've never owned Polks. My neighbor has some Polk monitor 50s (maybe 60s?) and I was pleased with what I heard but I didn't do any critical listening and he was playing music through his iPod docked to his receiver so the source may not have been the highest quality.
I was considering the Polk RTi10s, 12s which can be found pretty cheap. I really liked the Polk RtiA9s which are newer and more expensive at street/web price. My brother-in-law has some Mirage sats and a sub and I thought they sounded open and detailed. This with the price drop of the OMD-15s led me get them and so far, no regrets. They look and sound like an expensive speaker. I'd be happy if I paid twice as much.
I would decide based on your existing equipment. I understand Polks are usually easy to drive @ 89-90 dB, 8 Ohms. The OMD- 15s are rated at 89-90 dB but are 6 Ohms. I got 14 awg cable going from my Marantz SR6003 and its powering them fine, but I haven't really cranked the volume yet. The SR6003 can bi-amp and I may try that to see the difference. If you have a powerful receiver/amp that can drive 6 Ohm speakers I think you'll be more than pleased. Hope this helps.

For a while I thought nobody had owned or ever auditioned the OMD-15. I recently sold the Polks TSi 500 and got the OMD-15 about 5 days ago. I am using the Yamaha CX-800 and MX-800 amp.and the the sound is very good although they are now being broken in. There is a report by Danny Richie, from GR Research Speakers, on Driver Burn-In Facts in the Affordable $$ Audio Issue #12 of Dec 2006. This convinced me to take my time with the OMDs. I didn't have this patience with the Polks because I got them around last Christmas and was anxious to play my Christmas songs but I did not over drive them . They too sounded quite well. They were bright and musical but the OMDs are more accurate and defined. So far I only played them for about ten hours and certain types of songs have heavy bass which sound fantastic. On Sunday I played all my favourite songs until I had to listen to other songs I never liked just to chalk up some hours. Can't wait to crank them. Let me know if there is any big change in yours as you already have 20 hours. It will take me awhile to complete breakin as my wife takes off the music to view TV.

OMD-15's

I am sure you will like them. I have had mine for about a year now. I can't describe sound the way people do here. All I can say is they are great. I have the full complement of Mirage speakers to make up a 9.1 system. I used OMD-5's hung upside down for the height speakers and 4 big OMD-R's for the rear surrounds.

Charlo, I like the Mirage speakers very much I have the Nano Sat ones they are about 5 yrs old. Im now trying to sell them because I have up graded my system. I have loved them for years but it was time to upgrade so Im passing them on. As for as Polk vs Mirage I personally would get the Mirage because I like the bipolar design and how they fill the room with sound no matter where you are sitting at. They are a great speaker.

The Mirage OMD series are some beautiful speakers and they are a steal at that price of $399. Klipsch has bought out the Mirage and Energy brands so who knows what changes they are making to these brands. I suspect they are not producing the OMD line anymore (speculation) and thats why vanns is blowing them out? The lead design engineer that developed products like the high end OMD line and plenty of other products for Mirage and Energy is now employed by Axiom Audio. My personal choice between the two would be the OMD-15.

Great speakers... The OMD-15 is a bit on the hungry side, but feed it and it'll reward you with fabulous sound. I would have went with Mirage in this case over Polk.

OMD-15 placement

I am also considering getting the OMD-15s (thought the Vanns price has gone up to $499), but I'm concerned with speaker placement. I've read that 3' is ideal. Is that 3' to the back of the speaker or front? I'm not sure my wife is going to go for that, so I wanted to see if any of you with these speakers has been able to get away with 1' off the wall (to the back of the speaker), and still retained good sound. I'm most afraid of the bass getting muddy.

Thanks in advance for your advice. It's probably obvious, but this is my first post on this site.
