Minimum spacing around a screen

Hey guys, I just found this forum and I'm impressed with the quality of information here so I think I'll join.

I'm beginning the process of building a HT room in a few months and one question I'm having trouble figuring out is how big of a screen I can fit into my planned room. The only real constraint is the width of the room which will be 12.5'. The height is about 10' and the length can be up to 25'.

Most of the responses to similar questions revolve around where your seating will be, but in my case, the seating will be dictated by the screen size since I can put the seating anywhere I want.

My original plan was for a 120" screen which is about 104" wide but at that size, that leaves less than two feet between the edges of the screen and the side walls. That seems too small, especially since I need to fit speakers into that space.

So how much space should I have around the screen before it becomes cramped and how much space do I need to have between the side walls and the floor standing speakers without hurting the sound quality?

You may want to try posting a question about proximity of speaker to wall in the forum on room setup/acoustics, since that's really the issue here. Plus I think it gets a bit more traffic. I'm not a sound expert, but I'd think 2' sounds a bit tight, but not impossible. I've got about 30" between my screen and the wall and have a speaker in there with no trouble.

Other than that, I don't see any issue for you going as big as you can fit, as long as you have the projector (and placement) that can support a good image at that size.

Cheers,

Kevin

Design help

If you are just starting to build, I would go to carltonbale.com and view his downloadable home theater calculator. I found it very useful when designing mine.

In a sense, you can have the largest possible screen you want. Just make sure it's an acoustically transparent screen, and place the front three speakers behind the screen. So it could go like this: far wall, a couple feet of space, the three front speakers, a bit more space, then the screen.

Can you recommend a reasonably priced acoustically transparent screen, I have a similar situation in my future room.
