Hello everyone!

First post here. I am deciding to get into this hobby, as I have long enjoyed good quality sound. Nonetheless, as my main other pastimes are cruises and watches, I really am a complete and utter newbie to this. I am currently a university student, and am looking for a good sound system to keep in my room. While I am currently in university halls, next year I will move to my own apartment, albeit a relatively small one.

Mainly due to that reason I have been looking for a good quality mini-hifi system that will last me. The one I have been looking at so far is the Onkyo CS1045DB, although I really do not have much of an idea if it is a good choice or not. Budget currently is £1,500 although obviously if something of the same quality is available for less, then I will not mind saving a pound!

Also, is there any texts/sites/pages you'd recommend to a beginner to get a better idea about hifi and the industry ?

Thanks so much !

I know that mini hifi systems are popular in Europe. The system you are looking at relies primarily on a CD player for music playback. I think for £1,500, you could get a system that can stream your music. Computer based playback systems work great. So you might want to look at the Denon ceol: http://www.gramophone.co.uk/editorial/denon-ceol-a-strange-name-but-a-perfectly-sensible-streaming-solution. There are other streaming solutions out there as well. I imagine buying a mini-system should save you some money over buying separates but if it doesn't, I'd personally prefer picking out my own speakers. If you're not stuck on a mini system, the Onkyo TX 8050 is a pretty competent stereo receiver that has streaming capabilities: Onkyo TX-8050: a novel spin on streaming systems | gramophone.co.uk. You could add a pair of great bookshelf speakers and come well within your proposed budget.
