I watched this last week, but have been too busy to write up the review. I knew the story of what happened, and though I was young when that incident occurred, I still remember it being all over the news. I didn't know anything about Harvey Milk though and I found this movie to be quite excellent. The acting was very impressive from the majority of the cast. Sean wholly deserves the win for that performance. It is a very well done movie and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Aside from some man-kissing and such, it was pretty tame and well presented, focusing mainly on the stories of Harvey and his friends and Dan White.

Video was intentionally grainy in some scenes, as they tried to give it the look of having been period, but overall the PQ was very good. Not too much to talk about in the sound department, as it isn't an action flick, but the sound was good too.

Very good film. Sean Penn has certainly come a long way since Fast Times At Ridgemont High. What impressed me was how he captured the essence of the man without going overboard with the “gay acting” that would have turned the character of Harvey Milk into a caricature. His second lover (Jack) reminded me of Inigo Montoya, the character Mandy Patinmin played in The Princess Bride.

I do remember all the flack about Anita Bryant & her crusade against homosexuals, but I don’t recall hearing about the murders of Harvey & the Mayor.

Great story. I think I would rather have read about it and skipped right past all the gay romance. Sean Penn did do a great job with this role but he does a great job with every role. If you got a little sugar in your tank this one is a must own and should be placed right beside The Sound of Music. :p

That is what I liked about it, they didn't "over gay" it. It was part of the story, it was part of the struggle of the characters and that time in history, not about anyone's flaming gayness. It didn't get in the way and it felt realistic.

I live in the SF Bay Area, so the murders were BIG news here, which is why I remember it so vividly.

I actually thought Sean's best performance was in I Am Sam, but this one was spot on as well. If you've seen any file footage of Harvey, Sean channeld him very well - the mannerisms and methodology were very well done.

I really don't like The Sound of Music...

I'm also glad they didn't "over gay" it as you said, it was done tastefully, and the actual story is great, as well as the acting.
