I don't know if this thread was done before. What albums/artists do you think ushered in a new genre of music?

I'll start with East-West by Paul Butterfield Blue's Band. That album was the precursor to the genre of acid rock.

I'm not sure if this is quite the same thing you're talking about, but there are couple of albums that come to mind. I don't if they're milestones as much as just that there was nothing like them... it was like you were hearing something completely new and different.

1) In the 80's: Duran Duran: Rio & Seven and the Ragged Tiger
I still pull these and listen to them start to finish and still find it completely enjoyable to listen to and still unique.

2) around 1990: Pearl Jam: 10 - Grunge rock was making a name for itself, but there wasn't any band doing it with the musicianship they Pearl Jam could. Start to finish, that album is revolutionary. If you ever really listen close, the guitar work is just stunning.

3) around 1990: LIVE : Throwing Copper - my favorite band of all time. I was mesmorized by this disk and still probably listen to it in total once a month. I never get sick of it. Again, it's a sound, a way of both lyrics (which are extremely metaphorical) and music that just has this raw quality. There were no songs that sounded similar then or now. Lightning Crashes for instance is still played regularily on the radio nearly 20 years later and probably will be for some time. If you've never sat and listened to this disc, I'd really recommend it.

how about

1977/78 first VAN HALEN.... what kind of rock was around then??
Queen, BOC, Nugent , kiss, zep. who , stones fleetwood mac , eagles etc
even judas priest..........but their first few albums,,,especially VH I started a whole new type of rock....good time , party music,,flashy playing.
no epic ten minute tracks about dragons or symphony/choir backgrounds...just four crazy rockers that combined awesome musicianship..and good times..kinda of what the whole 80's metal scene became...IMO
ERUPTION anybody??? did for guitar, what hendrix did ten years earlier.

There are some dead obvious ones: Sgt. Pepper, Never Mind the Bullocks are usually cited.

Although, Never Mind the Bullocks is trumped by the Ramones' debut album (and Richard Hell and the Voidoids, "Blank Generation", 1976, for that matter), and Sgt Pepper is arguably trumped by The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds", as far as "ushering in" something new.

Some others...I'm sticking just to "rock" broadly defined (the Davis album is "jazz-rock"):

King Crimson - Court of the Crimson King
Miles Davis - B**tches Brew (the real name gets censored!)
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
Peter Gabriel - 3rd self titled album ("melting face")

One can play the "did it really come first" game with pretty much any of these albums, too, but that can get tedious.
