Woody Allen's latest is out and it's excellent. He wrote and directed Midnight in Paris, in which Owen Wilson's character is an aspiring novelist/dissatisfied movie writer on vacation in Paris with his mis-matched fiancee and her utterly awful parents. While they are busy missing the city's best parts, Gil takes a walk late at night and somehow ends up time shifted into 1920's Paris where he meets Hemmingway, Matisse, Man Ray, Cole Porter and other period glitterati. Gertrude Stein helps him with his book. His nightly "walks" become a habit. This movie is witty, clever, well written and highly enjoyable, especially if you ever wanted to spend an evening with F Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda on a bender. Wilson really channels early Woody Allen in his speech mannerisms and general demeanor. Again, a nice break from superhero, 3D fatigue. Paris itself is quite enchanting. It was the first time in a while where the movie audience applauded at the end and stayed for the credits.
