Melancholia is out. I'm not sure what to say that isn't a spoiler but then the movie "spoils" itself in the first five minutes,,,,the beginning is the end. Kirsten Dunst is excellent as a young bride in a million dollar, upper crust wedding with a completely toxic family and a decent but overwhelmed groom. She suffers from a serious dark side herself and is in the process of a complete psychological crash. All this happens in the context of the approach of a planet that seems to have come out of nowhere, due for a close approach to Earth (Anybody see Another Earth? Is this a strange plot? Sci-fi or psychodrama?). Dunst's sister's husband (the ultra rich financier of the wedding) is also an amateur astronomer and is eagerly watching the approach of the planet, which is named "Melancholia" in a way over-the-top metaphor.
This is all very right brain hemisphere stuff, with a disconnected, artsy narrative line, not unlike Tree of Life. The Walk-Out quotient wasn't quite as high as TOL and, as with TOL, the flick was completely understandable for Righties like me. It's a movie that takes part of Rachel Getting Married, mixes it up with something as down as The Road and makes it pretty for a while. See it with caution and, if you get as mad as some people got over Tree of Life, don't say I didn't warn you. It's quite good, but it's not easy.
