Media room question

I have a media room in my home. I have a projector, AV receiver, cable box, blu ray player, and surround sound speakers in the ceiling. I don't know jack about AV equipment. I'm listening to music on my phone (have it plugged into the receiver with the red/white wire) but I want to watch TV on mute while doing this...I can't figure out how to watch TV and listen to music at the same time. I have to put it on HDMI 3 to watch TV and I have my red/white wire plugged into AV 5 and am listening to music that way. When I turn the receiver to AV 5, the TV picture goes blank.

Can anyone help? I'm completely lost...

Some receivers support video passthru when you have an audio source connected to a audio only connection, such as the 'CD' input.

Other receivers allow you to choose between your digital audio input (cable TV on HDMI) and the analog audio input using the remote.

Depends on the A/V receiver.
