Mcintosh volume problem

So I have a McIntosh amp that when playing for awhile, the volume suddenly jumps up to a very high level. I'm thinking that the contacts are dirty as it's been inop for a number of years. Any thoughts ?

What “contacts?”

Are we to assume that it is a receiver? Which one? Never heard of the gain dials on their amps just randomly increasing volume. If the unit has sat for a while, its probably due for a good cleaning, and spec check.

The volume control contacts...like maybe electrical spray may fix it...
That would be contact cleaner spray. If the amp is old enough to have a rheostat volume control, about the only problem would be a scratchy sound when you turned the knob. About the only time I’ve had a problem like you’re describing, it was related to switches that changed input level that got dirty.

Hard to say beyond that, since there seems to be no inclination to share the model # with us...
