In comments to Reuters, Kazuhiro Tsuga, an executive at Japan's Matsushita, has stated next-generation Blur-ray and HD DVD formats will never merge. "We are not talking and will not talk," he said. "The market will decide the winner."

The market will decide which conglomerate of multinational corporations will be the winner.

To hell with those pesky "consumers".

Is it just me, or does anyone else here want to see Blu-ray fall on its face? I know it has better storage capacity, blah blah blah, but I get the feeling that Sony, Panasonic and the rest of the Blu-ray camp are the bullies here. Sony is still peeved-off about Beta, then its original video disc creation that lost out to DVD, and Super-Audio CD.

I think more people will recognize the name HD-DVD rather than Blu-ray. Most average Joes could care less about storage capacity. The formats should look and sound the same. The only issue I see going against HD-DVD is that Sony owns many of the major movie studios and you know they will never release any movies on HD-DVD unless Blu-ray completely flops (like Beta).

Anyway, my two cents. I'm hoping HD-DVD wins.

I too hope HD-DVD wins. I agree that the average joe will recognize the familiar "DVD" in HD-DVD more than Blu-Ray (What's that?....).

While I like panasonic products, I'm not behind them with Blu-Ray.

By the way, I like how the forum software bleeps "Matsushita". :D

That was funny... made me have to rethink my censorship setting on that one (it's fixed now).
It also bleeped my fun with D*ck and Jane thread. :D

I won't buy either one.
There should be a complete boycott of both players.
When both camps see that the consumer doesn't want
2 seperate DVD players then they will both be forced to
come up with only one.

But you know what. Consumer's are like sports fanatics.
No matter what the owner's charge, there will always be
enough consumers to support their excessive pricing
and enough dvd fools to force 2 seperate dimwitted manufacture's.

Hence. We lose.

BTW how are the 2 High End cd formats doing?
That well.

99+% people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between SACD and CD audio on their home systems, much less on a portable system or in their car.

However, even my girlfriend asked me why movies look so much better on Showtime HD than on DVD.

Joe Kane thinks they will be a niche format in that broad band download of HD movies will come soon enough to prevent HD DVD/bluray the success DVD was. I for one am going to sit this one out for awhile.

Clint, you might want to fix the first paragraph. I'm pretty sure the new format isn't "blur-ray" :D

I actually think "blur-ray" is appropriate considering the circumstances, don’t you?;)

I'm hoping that both camps will be surprised by the low demand for either product. I know I'll be waiting to buy untill wally world has $99.00 players and$14.99 movies. (not that I'd buy a $99.00 player at wally world, but I would know that its time to buy a player)

I'm not buying in right away, either, although I would love to. I really don't think there will be any real winners here. When folks figure out they will have to buy two players to get all the HD movies they want to see, I don't think they will be falling all over each other to rush out and spend that kind of money. Even if there is a clear market leader early into the game and the other bows out, early purchasers of the loser will be out of luck and most likely reluctant to buy into the winner anytime soon. Couple all this with the probability of HD content on demand readily available in the near future and they may both lose out.

It's a shame. Now that we are finally getting HD material to watch on our HD sets, most will still opt not to buy in.:(

Wasn't there a rumor that a combo blu-ray and hd-dvd player was in the works, or was it just that a rumor with no backing?

I'm not buying until the audio is ironed out. There's just too few movies to justify a $500 or $1000 player right now. This is true with HD cable as well. The market still needs to catch up to selling HD units to customers. There's still millions of people who don't have flat screens, HD boxes, etc... How about if the networks finally put all programming in HD, to show the public how good movies can work. That way, DVD movies will look substandard compared to cable. It's a sad day when the technology is here, but corporate America doesn't want to take advantage of it unless there's big profits involved.

Actually, LG will decide, since they make the majority of Panasonic's transports.
