Matching Surronds to Fronts??

Hey All,

I am looking for a little advice/knowledge on purchasing rear speakers for my HT. I currently have Monitor Audio fronts and center channel. I am now looking at adding rear speakers to get the full sound effect. I was planning on using in-walls from SpeakerCraft (either the MT6 2 or 3). But now I have found out that Monitor Audio makes in-walls as well for the Silver RS series, thus matching my fronts. The issue being is that the MA cost about $400 more then the SpeakerCrafts.

My question is how important are the "quality" of surround speakers and is it enough to warrant the additional cost of getting something that pairs with my fronts?

TIA,

-Jason

That question has caused many a fistfight.

I believe similar sounding speakers work just fine. I am quite content with the bi-pole DT matched with the front Acend Sierra's. However, I acknowledge the other sides's arguments as well.

Mazer is the expert on speakercraft so perhaps he can give first hand input.

If it is HT only... hmm. One of my surrounds cost 1/20 the cost of one of my mains. Im not worried about it all, that's just me. I am much more concerned with room acoustics, future treatments, better bass management, and the future purchases of pre/pro(s) for HT and/or stereo.

That being said, buying from the same brand always matches better, let alone from the same RS line.

If you listen to multi-channel music, I definitely vote to match. If only HT.... well, not as important to me, but if you got the money... why not? :D

I concur; If for HT, no biggie, doesn't need matching

if for multichannel music, most definately do you want to match

Yes, for music, I would definitely want to timbre match the rear speakers. Also, using a monopole desgn is best for rears if using muti-channel music, but for HT it's less critical. However, personally, I still prefer the surrounds to be matched with the front. But if you can save a few bucks, it's probably worth the compromise if it's going to be used for HT appications. Just my opinion. :)

Hi All,

Thanks for the responses. My setup is used 99% percent of the time for HT, that is why I was leaning towards the Speakercrafts. Going that route I could the extra cash difference on BD player. :D

Good choice. I use Sonance in-ceilings for my surrounds and they work great.
