Matching drive unit to existing cabinet/crossover

I have a set of a/d/s/ 1988 M15 monitor speakers. The cabinets are first rate, well braced and very heavy thick wood sides and oak veneer. They weigh about 90lb each. The driver units for these speakers are no longer made or supported and a/d/s in it's old form is no longer and they have not responded to my request for specifications of the original drive units.

The original drive units are dead, and even after replacing them with nasty cheap ($8) units from an auto speaker bucket shop they still sound great, so I am thinking it must be possible to buy other better quality drive units and rebuild these speakers. But having the cabinet and the crossovers in place how do I choose the drive units? Impedance, frequency response, power etc and from what manufacturer?
