Anyone have any thoughts on the MARTINLOGAN MOTION 40?

I have done a lot of reading up on that line, seems to be a very nice speaker, oversized drivers are used, the reviews I have read up on are all good don’t believe I have found a negative one. They are on sale right now on some websites. I did go to BB and auditioned them in person, very smooth detailed sound, the 40’s for music are excellent. Will need a Sub for HT. The 60’s are much better in the low end. Oh the photo don’t do them justice at all, very nice looking speakers.

I'm not sure that you could call those drivers over-sized? They look to be standard sized for a three-way tower speaker of that type.

Agree, only said that cause that is what Martin Logan are saying on their page about the drivers.

Thank you for your thoughts. I have auditioned the Motion 40's and will definitely go with the 40's. I had always planned to integrate with a sub so bass from the 40's was not important. I plan to integrate them with a SVS SB 1000 sub.

Cool, when you had a lil time with them 40’s, post up your thoughts. I would have thought you would’ve gotten more replies on MartinLogan speakers at least some input other than shady J’s post.

I auditioned the 40's 2 years ago. They are nice, real nice. Low end is lacking, but the sub takes care of that. Their ribbons produce a beautiful sound in the upper frequencies and give an incredible sound stage and pin point imagining. Where I found them lacking was in their dispersion. Sit in the sweet spot and you're in heaven. Stand up and the image is gone. Move left or right to far and again, the great image is gone. This is not a problem for someone who stays seated in the sweet spot, but if you are 2 chairs over it will not be good. This is why I went another route.

Yes...gladly.

I demoed both the 40 and the 60 with a wide range of music.

The motion 40 is a well rounded speaker. We're drawn in by the bass, but the midrange is the most important driver as most of the frequency range is reproduced by the midrange. That said, the tweeter often sells the speaker because that's the sizzle.

While they are not in the same class imo as the RAAL, I like the ribbon tweeter a lot in this speaker, and especially like the combination of the mid and tweeter...very clean, and smooth with just enough sizzle.

Don't be tempted to go for the 60 in search of more bass. While it does deliver more bass, imo it's at the expense of muddying up the mids...something in the Xover is not quite right to my ears...the 40 is a cleaner sound. Everyone in the demo room came away with that feeling I think.

If you're not done looking...the Revel F206 takes the SQ up a few notches over the Motion 40, but it's maybe another grand or so.

Bass on the towers is not an issue for me. I am running them with a SVS SB 1000 Sub. I agree with you that the mids and crisp highs sold the speakers for me.

Great move.

Yep, the ML40 do a pretty good job across a lot of genres. I think you've done well.
