Martin Logan Descent i....... WOW

Well stopping by last week at our Sound Advice store in Plantation (Fort Lauderdale for those of you away from here) I was speaking to a salesman and he informed me that the ML Descent was going to be going Disco (discontinued in salesman lingo) but was not sure why. Well this got my attention as I really want the Descent for my next sub, so a couple of things came to mind. One how much of a discount would I be able to get the Descent for, and two what in the world are they replacing this thing with?

Well the new model looks a lot like the old model but believe me it is not. The new Descent is the “Descent i”. It has three separate servo controlled switching amps, one for each driver. 250 constant watts and 700 peak. The amp is much like a Bash amp but an engineer at ML made it himself and it is supposed to be even better. That’s is a total peak wattage of 2100 servo controlled watts.

I do not know how many of you have had the pleasure of hearing a Descent but in my own opinion it is a percussive masterpiece to say the least. I take nothing away from SVS and HSU as I know they are very good, no phenomenal especially for the money, subs. But the Descent is a tremendous sub. Yes it is expensive but man is it awesome. Just thought I would let you guys know about this update.

They also made the grills virtually dent proof metal grills (this was a weakness on the old Descent as they were formed plastic grills that could not sustain much damage before breaking) and they also made the drivers even beefier than the original. Also the controls are now top mounted and there are adjustments for both the 25 Hz and 50Hz regions for correction or boosting of room induced nodes. All of this for only $200 more than the original. You can check it out on their website.

I just thought I would chime in on this.

What do you guys think?

The level of performance sub manufacturers are bringing to the market recently is absolutely incredible. I have always wanted to hear the Descent but have never gotten the opportunity. I see them from time to time for sale used, but they still bring better than $1500 used for the most part. Any idea on the time frame to which ML is going to introduce this sub? I assume it'll be this spring after the winter shows get us all worked up!! Ah yes, its a good time to be into Audio!!

Couldn't tell you but my family just picked up a whole ML setup, including the Depth (not the Depth i) and I've been very impressed by it.

They are in stores now.

Some stores already have them in now. Several in Miami do and I am waiting on my closest Sound Advice to get theirs just to check it out.

Word has it the new Descent i is actually designed to mate with the forthcoming Martin Logan CLX- an updated version of the old CLS pure stat panel design. No word yet on when the CLX will be released, but lots of ML fans are looking forward to it!

Also, based upon the recent increase in members/postings at the online ML Club (www.martinloganowners.com), there seems to be a huge spike in interest/sales of their latest models!
