Hello Audioholics!

Coming to you to gather a bit of help diagnose an issue that just occurred: no sound coming out of any speakers (subwoofer included) regardless of the audio source

The setup
- (purchased 2017) amp Marrantz SR5012
- (purchased 2017) front speakers: LR Castle Knight 1 & Center Castle Lincoln 2
- (added may 2021) back speakers (SURROUND): Alpha P3 PSB spec: link
- (added may 2021) subwoofer: PSB 250 series plugged in SUB 1

- Playstation 5 plugged in GAME via HDMI
- Samsung Q90A plugged in HDMI ARC OUT

The problem:
- no sound coming out of the speakers regardless of the input (radio, TV, game)
- this happened has I was watching youtube video from the TV, from one video to another

Other
- control panel works well
- reset factory settings did not work
- left unplugged overnight, in vain
- unplugged all the speakers, and tried one by one on the LEFT output only during the audio set up (when asked if I hear the tone), in vain
- Video goes through, ie, I can use the PS5, the audio goes to the TV.
- all cables have been thoroughly inspected
- no physical disruption
- tried to alter the Zone2 mode as well in settings, in vain
- turning on with ZONE2 source + status shows a DC failure (tried another outlet too)

I've reached out to a small reputable shop, who diagnosed with me over the phone that the HDMI board is highly likely to be the issue.

My question to the group is:
- have you ever experienced /heard something similar? anything I can do to further the diagnosis?
- I was under the impression that if the HDMI board was fried, no video would come out, am I wrong?
- am I doomed to buy a new amp?

Thanks a ton for your help

I'm on a 6012. Very early in my ownership I noticed intermittent audio dropout, even had a thread here back when this was going on.
Everything else worked, it was just intermittent audio drop.

Short version, after two trips to service: it was the digital board. The tech assigned to my 6012 was about to throw in the towel for the second time when she bumped her workstation while she still had my unit plugged in and "accidentally" recreated the problem.
It has worked fine ever since.
*knocks on wood

Key thing here is that the HDMI is just part of the board that is acting up. ;)

How much is a replacement Digital Board going to cost?

Thank you for your response Ryan, I'm going to try to plug it back and see later today in case that works.I've had that diagnosed over the phone, which needs to be confirmed in person I guess. I'm looking to find a shop that can estimate the replacement in the upcoming week, I heard things like between $600-$1200

I had the hope that it could have been "fixed" with some UI or physical manipulations

I guess this is a typical problem with those audio/video receivers... will have to look at alternatives if the repair is too costly!

This is a cr@ppy time to shop for electronics.
If you had to buy, I would recommend the Denon 3700 either new or refurb through Accessories 4 Less. You can get the HDMI Dongle from Sound United for free if you game at all or need to resolve that 2.1 issue that is plaguing the newest AVRs.

When my old Pioneer had hdmi board issues I could still use its analog inputs for a while (then the magic blue smoke let itself out eventually), so you might see if there's any functionality in use that way for now. Likely its time to shop for a new unit unless the correct part is both available and a reasonable cost to repair (and a unit that old may not have such boards available). Might want to contact a Marantz service center....

I read the CON on the SR5012: "Over driving the AMP may cause overheating and degrade audio performance."

I just replugged it, and the tuner outputs sound ! I will take the time this weekend to replug everything and see what's going on...but expectations remain low

Just for $200 more, you can get a brand new Denon 3700, direct on the manufacturer's site or most likely from authorized sellers as well. That option carries a 3 year warranty as opposed to 1 or 2 years at the most on a refurbished unit.

and I did suggest either as an option! :)

I had noticed. :)

I just bought one AVR-X3700 a couple of weeks ago. I haven't calibrated it as yet as I only installed the Audyssey MultiEQ Editor App today on my cell phone. Time will be put on that EQing in the very near future. I am somehow anxious to hear the results I can get with the app, as there is an important room gain in the LF below 100 Hz.
