Marantz SR5003 = no sound + burnt smell

I purchased a Marantz SR5003 refurbished through accessories4less about three weeks ago and it had been working just great up until today. It does not put sound out to the speakers any longer and there is a slight burnt smell on the left side of the unit. I can attach headphones to them and get sound out via the headphones, but I am afraid something else went terribly wrong with it. That is actually not what I am concerned about. I can get it warrantied. After I send this one in and get it repaired I would like to make sure I don't inadvertantly kill the next one...so I would like a little advice.

The reciever sits on top of a table in my basement in an un air-conditioned room. It gets warm down here, but rarely hot enough to make me sweat break a sweat. I am not the only one using the equipment so the reciever often gets left on for hours at a time. Not doing anything, but on. There is nothing on top of the reciever at all. It is completely out in the open. The reciever got warm on the top, but I didn't think that hot.

That said.....Did I just get a faulty unit? or did I do something terribly wrong? Should I have been running a fan on the reciever or something? I would have thought that if it had needed a fan they would have put one in the darn thing. What are your thoughts on the matter. I have not tried different speakers yet, but I highly doubt all of my 5.1 speakers died at the same time.....

There are a few things that could cause a failure, if indeed that is what happened. I'm assuming that you have, but did you check to make sure that (a) the mute isn't on and (b) the speakers weren't shut off? Like you said, other people use it, so maybe they did one of those things.

In case it was a failure, what speakers do you have connected to it? I'm asking so that we can check (unless you already know) if the impedance of the speakers might have been an issue.

From your description, I wouldn't expect that heat would have caused a good unit to fail. Being left on for hours isn't anything out of the ordinary.

The mute is not on. I double checked. The speaker setup is 4 rc-10's for the surrounds, 1 rc-lcr for the center, and a powered energy esw-v8. The sub is plugged into the pre-out.

With the headphones unplugged, check the speaker indicator on the front panel. It's located in the upper left corner. There is an "SP" symbol, and then there should be an "A", "B", "C", or a combination of those next to it. I say with the headphones unplugged because the speakers won't work with the headphones still plugged in, but I don't know if it affects the display.

A description of that display is located on page 6 of your owner's manual.

Are the speakers activated according to that display panel?

WOOT. They work again. LOL. There was nothing right next to SP in the box. I hit the a/b button on my remote and glorious sound erupted from my speakers. Someone must have accidentally hit a button on the remote.

Must be the smell i smelt was just a warm amp or something. Thanks so much. I wasn't not looking forward to going back to my z5500's while the reciever was fixed.

Excellent! Glad to hear it. I'm glad that you didn't have to return it and go through that hassle.

Once you smell burn Adam, you are way beyond simple checks. It is shut down time period.

You always run a risk with refurbs, those are units repaired after a fault. Often when fixing a fault you end up fixing cause rather the effect. I would bet money this unit has failed in the same way hat caused the return originally, and the reason behind the failure eluded the service personel. That unit should really be recycled now.

Okay, so what was the "burnt" smell????
Not sure what that was. It still smells like it did before, but maybe that it is just warm paint or warm components or something. Either way it does work now so obviously nothing burned up.

I don't really want to start the refurb/new argument, but I have only heard good things about the build quality of Marantz equipment and I would expect that the same build quality would be extended to their refurbs.

That aside I can't very well return the unit to fix something that isn't broken. One of my younger siblings must have hit a button on the remote and shutdown the speaker output and turning it back on fixed it. Gotta admit though I almost had a heart attack when I couldn't get the sound working.

It might not be a bad idea to get a flashlight and have a look inside the recevier through the top grille. Since you have it in the basement, little creepy crawlies could have gotten in there...You may event get cob webs etc inside of the receiver with it being in the basement. It's possible a bug/spider could have gotten cooked...;) That box is a great place for them to hide. Also, basements tend to be more humid than other rooms...

Thats probably a good idea. There are definetly plent of creepy crawlies in the basement. I have watched many a spider walk across the floor down there...lol my sisters hate that. I wonder what a cooked spider smells like :D

We do have a dehumidifier down there so I don't think the humidity gets too bad....
