the older one has only component ins and outs. newer ones have hdmi and switching. money is and issue just not sure if i can use the hd cable box hdmi to the tv and use optical audio for the sound

HDMI is, in itself, generally not a good enough reason to buy a new receiver.
What cable box do you have?
In most cases, there is no reason to not be able to split the audio and video at the cable box.

satellite (DishNetwork or DirecTV) or fiber optic (AT&T uverse0 are so much better than cable. The standard channels look better than hD cable channels.

If you are already component (Y, Pr, Pb) you won't get than much gain going to HDMI.

you wont get any difference in pq. Also depending on where you live in the city, its tough to get sat signals.

I have that box as well.
There is no reason to not run the HDMI to the TV and the sound via digital coax to the receiver.
No reason other than switching convenience. And given the quirkiness of HDMI, I think that's highly over rated.
