Equipment details:
Marantz SR4002
Samsung BD-1400
Samsung 50" 1080P DLP
-all connected via HDMI.

My receiver doesn't decode the new uncompressed audio formats from DD and DTS. Do I have to have the Blue Ray player set on PCM to get the most out of the audio?

Thanks in advance,

Josh

Answer to your question is: Yes.

You can enjoy DD+ and DTS-HD, but you will need extra cables, and if your BR DVD player decodes the signals. Not familiar with your BR player, but if it has analogue (RCA) out in the back for each channel, then you would need to connect from those out to your SR-4002 inputs for those channels. Then your BR player will do the decoding.

interesting. I thought it would pass that over HDMI but I guess I'll try it with the analogue outputs.

It will pass over HDMI, just set the Blu-ray player to Multichannel PCM. The Marantz is fully capable of decoding 7.1 LPCM over HDMI (which it seems like you knew that), but that should work.:) That player only has 5.1 analog outputs.

I thought that's what it was doing. the front panel durring spiderman 3 read Mch7.1, and durring 300 said Mch5.1. so I guess I have it setup as good as I can get it with my equipment.

Thank you

This is only to decode DD+ or DTS-HD from your player, which like I said, don't know if it has the decoders built-in.

For the other dolby and dts formats, which your SR-4002 has, audio over HDMI (PCM) is the way to go, and Seth is correct.

The Multichannel PCM is just as good as the Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD to be honest. They are all part of the same team, as it where.:)

The Blu-ray player decodes the bitstream Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD and converts it to uncompressed LPCM. If you had an HDMI 1.3 receiver with those decoders, and a Blu-ray player with HDMI 1.3 you could just send the Bitstream directly to the receiver, but in reality you end up with the same sound quality, as the only thing that changes is where the conversions take place.:)
