My buddy from work just bought a Marantz 4003 reciever, along with a new Samsung 61" DLP, and a Samsung BR. He's trying to set it up, but he's having quite a few problems. He has everything connected via HDMI. He's getting a picture with both his cable box, and his BR player but he isn't getting any sound from either. Can't figure out what's goin' on here. Anyone here have any input on this??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Billy

Hey, Billy. Check the owner's manual for the HDMI audio set up section. Your buddy might need to (a) assign the HDMI audio to a certain input and/or (b) set up the HDMI audio to be processed by the receiver instead of being passed through to the TV.

I'll take a look myself if I have time, but I wanted to tell you how I'd do it.

Okay, here's a copy of the owner's manual.

Page 21 discusses assigning the inputs.

Page 24 discusses setting up HDMI audio to be processed by the receiver or passed through.

Hmmm...

This sounds like an either/or proposition. Choose carefully, grasshopper.

Of course, there's no law saying you can't run a red/white analog audio pair from the sources directly to the TV for those times you don't want to use the receiver's sound. ...but odds are you'll still have to have the receiver powered on to pass the video.

Or, another option is to pass thru the video to the TV and use a digital link (coax, toslink, whatever it takes) between the sources and the receiver.

In either case it involves two additional wires to have your cake and eat it too.

I just talked to him, and he had just left it in auto thinking that it would automatically assign his components. He's gonna manually assign them after work, and I'll let ya know if it works which I'm sure it will.

Thanks again,

Billy

In addition to the input assignments, it's important to note that the SR4003 does not have HD decoders and will only accept a PCM signal over HDMI for those formats. Which Samsung BR player does he have as some can output in PCM and some can't. If this is the case, he can switch to the Panny BD55 and problem solved.
