Marantz, Onkyo, Yamaha, or Denon?

I'm trying to decide on a good receiver for $500 or less. I'm on a cheap budget but want something that is good for music and movies. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Good choice! it went for 436...not a bad price for that. Keep checking the Harmon audio store in ebay. they list new stuff each day and are a great company to purchase from.

I have also heard many people mention the pioneer 1015 for less than 400 shipped.

Yamaha RX-V1500

With the newer model out, you can find the RX-V1500 for about $500 from authorized dealers. This is a good, feature packed receiver and also makes a great pre-amp. Also, note that the HTR-5890 is an identical model with the THX certification. My budget was in the $300 range so I went for a lower yamaha models.

I recommend the htr 5890, I have one in my listening room and it sounds wonderful, has video upconversion and can switch HD signals

Marantz receiver

Marantz SR5500 for $399 refurbished from www.accessories4less.com, would this be better than the Yamaha or Onkyo all with component video up conversion? I have had an Onkyo, Sony, and JVC and by far the Onkyo was the best, didn't know if I should go back?

Widescreen compatible receiver

I know this may be a crazy question but are all receivers compatible with
Widescreen TVs? I have a 34" Sony Wega HDTV, with Bose center, and 301 speakers (I know now after getting hooked on home theater equipment, BOSE is the last thing I need) I will be upgrading my speakers after my receiver. My trouble now is picking out the right receiver under $500 (cheap budget). I do want a component video up conversion receiver, so I'm on a hunt.

Marantz guy here...

Onkyo is good. IMO, Marantz sounds better, but usually gives up some of the latest features compared to the competition. They have been changing that in the last year or two though. Sony wouldn't be my choice regardless of price.

A buddy of mine highly recommends the 5890 as well. I haven't heard it, but he said it has a good amp section.

Widescreen makes no difference to your reicever, since it isn't actually providing the signal.

Any receiver that has component video (three red, green, and blue rca plugs) switching and offers the video conversion feature you need will work great with your HDTV.

Another fantastic receiver for the price is the Panasonic XR55. Though any of the receivers thus far recommended will do the job.

Check audiogon. People tend to dump last year's models rather quickly

I just recently purchased a Yamaha 5890 and i like it very much.
I really like the fact that it upconverts all composite and s-video signals to component to minimize the clutter on the back of my TV.

if youre on a budget you can't go wrong with this unit.
discrete 6.1 DD and DTS

for under 500 I would look into the Yamaha being mentioned. It has everything you need in a receiver: power and the ability to play all types of formats. Yeah I would definitely recommend this receiver.
