Marantz 6004 with a sub

I have always used my Martin Logan Grotto sub with a line level feed in my HT set up. I am building a 2 channel integrated amp system for music only.
AMP will be..maybe... A Marantz PM6004
Now this amp does not have a sub out but you can hook a sub up to it at the speaker level. Is this a good way to set a sub up? Will it sound the same?
Thanks and sorry for ignorance

Hooking up the sub using speaker level inputs is not an issue. The bigger concern is lack of proper bass management. Your speakers will get full range signal. To ensure there is no bump/dip in the FR, you will need to select the cross over setting on the sub in a manner that matches the speakers natural roll off with room interactions taken into account.

For example, if the lower -3dB rating for the speaker is 50Hz, this will be the starting point for the setting on the sub. (Somewhat oversimplifying the situation.) From here, you will need to tweak the setting to compensate for peak or dip introduced by the room. It you have a peak centered on 50Hz, keep the setting lower or if there is a dip, keep the setting higher.

Thanks. I think I kinda understand that. I am a die hard music lover but am very new to understanding all of what you are talking about...I think that's why my home theater was set up with on screen menus and Audio mic..I set it and forget it....
2 channel music concern. Finding the best sound. It's easy to just have two speakers and use a tone control...Maybe I will just use two floor standing speakers and forget the sub.

I have a PM7200 in a 2ch setup much like what you describe and it is hooked up via speaker level input since there wasn't a simple way to use the preouts. The preouts on the 7200 are fixed, so they don't adjust with the volume, unless you split the output prior to the main amp loop, which I think is what I am going to do. You still have the issue of no bass management with this method of connecting.

The 8004 has no bass management either. I think new speakers and a less expensive amp will be my direction...
Any thoughts on what's the best integrated amp and cd combination.
1200.00 budget.

Another option is to add an electronic crossover, like this one:

dbx 223s Stereo 2-Way / Mono 3-Way Crossover 246-101

To use ordinary RCA connectors, you would need adapters, like:

RCA Jack To 1/4" Mono Plug Adapter 090-285

You could use any preamp/poweramp combination you wanted with such a device (as it would be inserted between the preamp and the power amp, with the bass going to the line level inputs of your subwoofer).

And you would have to manually balance the subwoofer with the main speakers, using a test disc and an SPL meter. If you wanted this done automatically, you would probably be best served by buying an AV receiver instead that has an automatic setup (all but the lowest models now have this feature).

I would actually look at the Outlaw RR2150 stereo receiver. It does have a preamp sub out and adjustable x-over. Should easily pair well with most speakers too. It wasn't out yet when I bought my PM7200 otherwise I would have bought it instead.

I am in the same position and hope that someone will help me out. I have a new Maranat 6004 receiver and need to hook up a sub. My sub is an Energy ESW-10. It has a low pass filter control, a phase control switch and a left/right line in/sub in connection.

can some please reply and let me know how to connect this?

Thanks

John

Hi, John. The images that I saw on the internet for the ESW-10 (e.g. from Amazon.com shown below) show that it has speaker-level inputs. Does your version have those (I ask because Amazon might be showing the wrong image, such as the ESW-C10)? If so, you could connect it to the Marantz that way assuming that you currently only have one pair of speakers hooked up to the Marantz. Blending it together with your speakers is a bit more involved because your amp won't be handling the bass management, but it is possible to do. What speakers are you using?
