Marantz 5100 Load Problem

Hi guys
my 1st post here so forgive me if this is the wrong thread! I have had the 5100 AV Amp for a while and love it (its as good as my budget allows!) I have just moved house and am having trouble setting it up again - basically its loading up at too low a volume - it cuts out at a little under 1/2 volume, I used to be able to crank it up to 85% before it would do that. I must be doing something wrong!

Equipment is as before:
Fronts center and rears are Monitor Audios, seperate powered sub. The fronts are bi-wired and driven using the center backs with the appropiate switch in its correct position.

Any ideas, or any more information I should be providing?

Thanks all

Finnie

Welcome Finnie. Sorry, no help here as the manual is not available for download from Marantz. I'll download the 5200 manual to see if that'll help.

check for whisker shorts.

Finnie,

Welcome to audioholics.

Recheck all of your speaker wiring and see if you could possibly have a whisker short ( a loose wire strand on a briaded wire connection).

This is the most likely cause of your problem.

If you can't find a obvious short, i would diconnect all speakers and disconnectect the wire from both the speakers connection and the receiver connection. Then I would connect speakers bacl one at a time and after connecting each speaker recheck to make sure the sound is still okay.

Good Luck!

For a receiver to "cut out" at any volume sounds like a malfunction. It should just get to a point of distortion or clipping. When it cuts out, does that mean shut down? What impedance are your speakers?

Thank you!

Yes a whisker short sounds a good idea - I'll give it a go! Interestingly I have just got a big panel (Samsung 50") for it with HDMI and its my first time to try it. Its disapointing how slow both the screen and the Blu Ray player (also Samsung) are to react - presume that's something to do with the anti copy software?

Thanks for the help!

I have a feeling something is wrong with this statement. Bi-wiring should be done from the single front speaker output to the dual connections on the speaker. It sounds like you're trying to run a bi-amp connection which that receiver shouldn't be able to handle. The 5200 is a 6.1 receiver, so I'm assuming the 5100 is as well. I don't see anything in the 5200 manual that allows for more than a single back center.

Thanks all!

Problem solved - it was a "whisker short" on the back of one of my fronts, not on the amp itself. Now sounding marvellous and the HDMI looking fab on my 50" panel. And yes it has a facility for Bi-Amping - its a 7.1 AV Amp and I'm running a 5.1 setup so it has a specific facility for doing this. IMHO it makes no discernable differance while listning/watching movies but does make an appreciable differance when listning to CDs.

Thanks again all :)

That's great! Are you sure you didn't mean 5001 and not 5100 model?

Pg 23 of the 5001 manual shows it and calls it bi-wiring, but the concept is actually bi-amping since it's using different amps.:rolleyes::(
