marantz 5008 Reciever and 3.1 sound

I have a Marantz 5008 with Martin Logan motion 15s and motion 8 center for the fronts. My wife is very finiky and sometimes she does not like to have the surround channels on.

The Marantz does not seem to have a 3.1 codec to turn off the surround. Choices are Stereo, which omits the center channel or Dolby or DTS surround modes where all speakers are active. The only way to play in 3.1 seems to be to physically disconnect the rear speakers.

Does anyone know if there is another way to play the Marantz in 3.1?

You should be able to disable speakers using the receiver's internal manual speaker setup menu.

You don't have to physically unplug speakers to silence them. Disabling them in the menu should cause the receiver to down-mix the rear surround channels to the front speakers. Simply unplugging the surround speakers would cause the rear-surround audio to be lost entirely, since the receiver wouldn't know they're missing.

Disabling the speakers shouldn't disable Audyssey, either. That should only happen if you later add more speakers than you have now.
