I'm brand new to Audioholics and just returning to the AV world from a long absence. I'm looking at a Marantz SR 4600 receiver to start. My room is small (12X15) and I'm looking at the Polk 6005 speakers with the sub woofer as my initial speaker purchase. This will be paired with a Dell 42 in Plasma, which I already own. Actually, I will probably listen to music 60% of the time.

I haven't seen many articles or comments on the Marantz 4600 and hope that you folks can comment. My other receiver choices would be the Onkyo 503 or 603.

Thanks

I bought my dad a 4400 and its a solid little performer. The lower Marantz units don't seemt to get much talk here, but they're good. I'd probably avoid the smaller Polks, especially with that much music listening. What's your speaker budget?

Thanks for the comment. I really don't have a set budget. I'm just getting back into the music-TV world and want a better experience than TV speakers/radio. I suppose that I'd really like to stay under 600-700 for the speakers, simply because I have other expensive hobbies. I've also looked at a Creative Soundworks speaker system ( I don't immediately recall the model number), that was around 700. As usual, I seem to look at things that are not mainstream and, again, haven't seem much written about the Cambridge Soundworks line.

sorry if there was any confusion on the other speakers. I am considering the Polk 6005 line with sub woofer and the Cambridge Soundworks Movie works 58, 108 or 208 package.

You can pick up the Athena Micra 6 package at Best Buy (online), if they have any left for $300; it includes a sub. It's a basic package, but it should do OK. The Athena Point 5 system can be had at www.onecall.com for $200, but it doesn't include a sub; but you can easily find a decent sub, probably one better than the one that comes with the Micra 6 package, for $100-200. For music listening, you're going to probably want to try to get the best main pair of speakers you can afford and build the rest of the system around them, within your budget.

There's also the HSU Ventriloquist package + STF-2 sub at www.hsuresearch.com for $559
