Marantz 1501

Novice member so please excuse if query a little basic. I have been searching my user manual for way to decrease bass and/or increase treble on my Marantz 1501 Receiver. I am using Mordaunt Short Alumni speakers.
Sound options pretty much OK for DVD's but my system is linked to TV sound and in that mode have some difficulty because sound appears quite bassy and can be hard to pick up dialogue sometimes (with my ageing hearing) . Have tried switching thru the various sound options and most times sound is best for me in Multi Channel, but would still like to improve. Speaker system is

Put it in pure direct for starters

Now try pulling the speakers away from the wall about 3 feet.

Does that change the sound?

What is pure direct please ??
My speakers are not wall mounted - I have centre and the two front R and L positioned along long cabinet along with TV.
