Manual system calibration

Dear all,

Armed with a tape measure, SPL meter, and my own limited knowledge, I have enough confidence to be able to manually set the wiring, distance, size and level parameters in the setup of my 5.1 system. However, this still leaves the Equalizing (composed of Frequency, level and Q-factor) which Yamahas YPAO automatic calibration sets.

1. Is it ill-advised to tamper with these?

2. If the answer to 1. above is no, then where can I read-up on these parameters so that I know exactly what it is that I am changing?

Regards

If you have to ask... :D

Seriously, I'm not familiar with that receiver so I don't know what it's capable of or what it does automatically. But I can tell you that using EQ often does more harm than good.

Even so, I'd still like to learn more about the topics. Any idea of where I can find material on them?

There's a good tutorial about the basics of equalization on my Articles page:

www.ethanwiner.com/articles.html

Look for The Art of Equalization 6th in the list.

There's also a lot of advice on room treatment - including why using EQ is not as useful as you might think - in the Acoustics FAQ, 2nd in the list on the same page.
