Making your own cables

I have two sets of monster cables I got from the cable company when I hooked up the DVR and HDTV. They are white component with two analog audio cables. They are 20 feet long and I only need at most 3-5 feet. They seem like they are quality cables they are just too long. Can I cut these to shorter lengths and put new RCA plugs and use them for Component, Digital audio, subwoofer. All the cables look to be the same diameter, however I have not cut them yet to see if they are the same on the inside. If I can do this what do a need ie. cutter crimper what types of plugs. And where would be the best place to purchase them.

Personally I would not. I would just buy cables the length I need them. Now if you are planning on making a lot of cables, then you might want to invest in a compression crimp tool and some good cable. Otherwsie, www.PartsExpres.com has some good cables for little money.

Compression tools and stipping tools may not be something you want to deal with, likewise you may not want to deal with soldering. Yes, you can do all this and invest in it, but you may want to just get some prefab cables from www.bluejeanscable.com or if you want a specific length, eventually www.avintegrated.com will have Planet Waves cabling up... Next week hopefully. No special tools required at all. Scissors and a flat head screwdriver to make your own cables.
