Making the connections

I have a 46" Hitachi HDTV. I recently purchased a Yamaha RX-V730 Receiver, 2 Mirage Omni-60 speakers, a Mirage Center channel and I also have a JVC DVD Player. All video connections are with Composite Video Cables.

I have other components; Yamaha turntable, Sony 200 disc CD Player, but I'm holding off connecting till I get this video problem figured out. I do not have a VCR at this point.

My video source is from Brighthouse (formerly Time-Warner cable), with a HDTV set top box.

My problem is (or has been) that I don't know how to make the video connection from the receiver to the TV. This Yamaha Model is supposed to have and On-Screen Display, but I haven't yet seen it!

The speakers work fine, so I know the connections work OK for the TV, Tuner, CD & DVD Player. However, with the DVD connected through the Receiver, I get no picture. I have connected the DVD directly to the back of the TV and the DVD works fine?

Any idea's?

Thanks for any help (in advance)!

Just checking but you did connect the tv to monitor out and not the tv input?

Also OSD generally works through S-Video and coposite only. Only some very high end models support component OSD. The OSD comes on when you go into setup mode, there's a button or switch on the remote for that.

If I follow you correctly, yes, I did connect a set of composite cables from the monitor out to the TV (I conncted them to the Input 2) on the back of the set.

Just some more info - I called the store where I purchased the receiver & the speaker's, and I was told that I wouldn't be able to get OSD with the Comp. cables, that I would need to connect either a std. video cable (yellow ended connector) or S-video. I did the yellow ended connector, and I now have OSD.

I also removed all composite from the receiver, and re-connected them back to the TV. Too frustrated trying to figure this out.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Spencka,

I mentioned above that Component did not support OSD. I would recommend S-Video over composite (yellow) connections.

You're losing me with the rest. Do you now get a picture? What do you still need to figure out?

I will try the S-Video cables and will let you know. I do have a TV picture, and I am (now) able to get On Sreen Display, but only since I connected that composite cable. As you suggested, I will try a S-video cable, and will get back with you on the results.

At this point, my Yamaha Receiver has three sets of rear connections for Component Video Jacks. One set (of three) for DVD, one set (of three) for D-TV/CBL and the last set for Monitor out.

I disconnected all Component Video Cables from the back of my TV, I connected the cables from the DVD Player to the Yamaha Component input connectors, the cables coming from my (Brighthouse) Cable box went to the three connectors marked D-TV/CBL connectors, and I connected one set of Component cabes to the Monitor out connectors of the Receiver to the back of the TV.

I was able to get audio from my DVD Player, but no video. I did get a cable TV picture, but nothing from the DVD Player.

At this point all video Component cables have been re-connected back to the rear of the TV, in the same orginal manner.

Thanks again!

OK two things could be wrong.

1. The component cable connections are reversed. Check your colors carefully. Also sometimes it has been known for a cable to be manufactured incorrectly. Swap the cables between your DVD and cable box, and see if the problem moves . This is more likely to produce either a picture with weird colors, or a torn up picture with no sync depending on which connectors are reversed.

2. Your DVD player has an output selector switch on the back panel, or requires that you select the video output via the user setup menu. Not selecting the right output will likely produce no picture at all. Your TV may give you a blue or black screen.

seemed simple enough:(

I too need hook-up advice. I have a fairly simple set up, TV, VCR, DVD player and a Yamaha RX-V740 and would like to hook up a second VCR. There is a specific bank on the receiver (oddly enough marked VCR2) which is where I connected the composite cables.I get audio but no video from the second VCR even though VCR2 is selected in the imput mode. The unit is only two years old so I don't think the video jack is wonky.I've done everything the manual suggests but obviously something is missing in the mix. What I'm trying to do is run two VCR's to record separate channels at the same time. My cable is right out of the wall and before adding the second VCR the cable went into the VCR then out to the TV. Everything worked great.Adding the second VCR is presenting a problem. Any help would save what little hair I have left. Many thanks!
